Anyone with any experiences to share regarding University of Leicester and the halls. The website states there is a 20 minute bus ride to the actual university?

No actual experience of a DC going there, but have visited. The Student Village is at Oadby, but there is a regular bus service and also, there are halls available in the city (it's a few years since DS1 and I visited, but I think quite a lot more accommodation has been built since then). Catered accommodation was at Oadby, which DS1 wouldn't have wanted, but there is quite a range of accommodation there.

Happy to help. DD2 and I rocked up unannounced just before Easter 2019 at Oadby student village reception. The manager gave us a long personal tour round the various options.

You/your DC has to choose between catered and self-catering. DD chose s/c because it was cheaper. There is a massive Asda a 10 minute walk away from the student village. You can also choose between en suite or shared bathroom accommodation. DD chose shared and ended up in her first choice which was a court at Beaumont Hall, flats of 10 single rooms with a shared kitchen, 4 toilets and 2 showers. She often walked into the uni which took around 45 minutes, or there is a regular bus which took 15 minutes off-peak. Lots of the accommodation is sited around the Botanical Gardens which are lovely. Sadly, DD was there for just under 2 terms due to Covid. I picked her up in March, but she left her cooking stuff & other bits. They allocated collection slots in May, but were really understanding about people travelling a long way. Everything was laid out ready for her to collect from the kitchen so it took a lot less time than we planned.

DD is now in a private house closer to the uni. The student village people said that they aimed to help students secure private lets. They were always helpful to her if she had a problem.

I'm a northerner; DD was born & bred in the SW. Both of us have loved the friendliness of the people of the city. She is really happy there. I know it's not RG but my DD is having a fantastic time and doing really well. She's now waiting to hear if she can spend next year abroad, something that our local RG uni cannot offer. We have been kept informed during the pandemic, receiving updates from the VC and I am impressed by everything I have seen there. Her sister is at Cambridge, which is obviously very highly regarded but both institutions seem to be providing excellent teaching, resources and care.

It's an uphill walk from the Oadby halls to Asda, that I remember well Grin
It's a very easy cycle ride to uni though from there.
There are closer halls but the Oadby halls really aren't far, it's not just a campus uni like Reading.

I lived in Oadby halls and cycled. Pleasant

DS (now third year) lived in Oadby student village in his first year. It's very leafy and seems like a pleasant place to live. After the first year, a lot of students live in the Clarendon Park area.

He likes Leicester University and is happy with his choice. The city is quite an inexpensive place to live compared to some.

It's not very much uphill to Asda. We live in Devon so nothing is flat here, but I managed fine and have a deeply dodgy ankle.

If you want any info on Oadby accommodation, feel free to PM me. DD2 is home now and happy to help out.

Thanks all. The offer came today so think he is going for it! Just needs to get the grades now!

Congratulations to him on the offer!

Practically all the freshers at Leicester live in Oadby SV. I think it would be a big social disadvantage to be elsewhere, even if technically it's closer to the Uni.
Also remember there will probably still be online content even come September so depending on course, it won't necessarily be an everyday bus journey, but maybe a 2-3 times a week one.
