Any experiences of Nottingham university?

Dd wants to study Criminology at Nottingham (the main university, not Nottingham Trent) and I can’t seem to find much posted here about what it’s like etc. Anyone have any tips or experiences to share?

Thank you.

My DD loves it. Beautiful campus, fantastic student city (normally loads going on), amazing sports facilities. DD is in 3rd year now and the added bonus is housing is cheap. I've another one at Bristol and her rent is almost twice as much.

One of my daughters went there (who is now a London lawyer). She loved it. Obviously it is a tier down from say Oxbridge, Durham, Bristol etc but still very good.

mumsneedwine · 29/11/2020 13:14

😳not sure what tiers those are. Both in tier 3 at the moment 😂. Depends if you want campus or city. Notts very much campus.

Did my undergrad there, however probably can’t comment in any useful way as I lived at home. It’s a good university with a good reputation and Nottingham is a great city.

Bagelsandbrie · 29/11/2020 16:34

Thank you everyone for your comments. Positive stuff so far! We live near Norwich but dd doesn’t want to go to UEA (and they don’t do the course she wants anyway) so Nottingham isn’t miles and miles away but it’s far enough to feel like a new beginning.

We were shocked at how cheap the accommodation is too! Shock One of her other choices is Bath and some of the prices there are almost twice as much for a similar standard.

It’s a brilliant well regarded university, great campus, plenty of reasonable student digs off campus, fabulous city to be a student in, well connected for travel by road and train. Both I and my eldest were students there and have great memories

DD couldn't look around all of her choices but had questions in order to rule one out. Phoned Nottingham, the person she spoke to didn't even know of her course. She asked to be referred to a relevant department and never got a call back. E-mailed and again no reply. I can't comment on what it's like when you're there, but phone calls ruled it out here. The two other unis she that were in the offing, got back to her within 24 hours.

Starfish I think you might give Uni staff a teeny bit of leeway at the moment - it’s fantastically stressful for them to deliver the courses remotely with elements of Covid safe face to face teaching/labs etc where possible.

DS is in his 2nd year at Nottingham. He loved his first year (before it was cut short), he was staying in halls on campus.

Thank you so much everyone Brew

I would just add that most of the first year accommodation on campus is catered, and this put DD off as she is vegetarian and an excellent cook.

My daughter was at Nottingham in uncatered campus accommodation. Campus Is beautiful and Uni life was fun . City close by ...strongly recommend this university. She studied psychology.

Iamsodonewith2020 · 05/12/2020 22:03

Wow. My son is in Nottingham and we paid £165pw for his first year and then £130pw now he is second year. Worried now as we thought this was ridiculous as nearly as much a month as our mortgage and have another child to put through university!

Iamsodonewith2020 · 05/12/2020 22:04

It’s a fantastic student friendly city though

KindKylie · 05/12/2020 22:10

I went to Nottingham as did one of my siblings and a cousin has recently graduated too. It's a very well established uni so great support services, facilities :etc and very well regarded qualifications too. The campus is beautiful with the lake to walk round and art gallery etc but it's not out of the city so easy to walk/cycle into the city centre. There's loads going on, great transport links and fab shopping. I'm really glad I picked it (met my lovely dh there too!)

BackforGood · 06/12/2020 21:03

I really liked it. (Though dd didn't choose it).
To me it has both advantages in that it is a campus, but it is also part of a City.
Some campus Universities (eg Lancaster or Warwick or Loughborough) are a little bit further out / separate from the local town. It can make 2nd yr accommodation a bit more tricky but also jobs etc - having to travel home at night from night life too. Nottingham has a tram that runs into the City station (plus buses if you prefer).
It does seem to have a disproportional amount of catered accommodation, but there is some self catered accomm.

My son has an offer from Nottingham uni for 2021 though we haven’t managed to look at it yet due to restrictions. It’s great to read these comments as he’s still undecided whether to choose it first. OP we also live just outside Norwich: Nottingham seems to be the perfect distance!

Hangingover · 05/02/2021 15:16

It's good. I don't know how it compares to other unis in this respect but it felt quite strict when I was there. The staff are very nice but they're heavyweight academics doing their own research so if you piss about they don't give you the time of day (I nearly got booted out in Y1)
