My DS is looking to go to university next year but will still be living at home. He is 18. What happens regarding tax credits?

www.gov.uk/child-tax-credit-when-child-reaches-16#:~:text=Child%20Tax%20Credit%20usually%20stops,registered%20with%20a%20careers%20service.

I think it depends on if his higher education is on the approved education list.

Don’t think they do them for higher education, my son is at college -19 only doing an NC so I get them for him still but I’m sure it stops if he begins the HNC next aug - I got a helpful leaflet from child benefit specific to Scotland as the online stuff was all English quals and I got a bit confused I let them know online too which was handy but I know the phone lines can be really busy but I’d call to ask if you can’t find the info online

No, you don't get tax credits for university students.

My tax credits stopped in the August before my DS started uni. You only get them past them being in Y13 if they are doing a further ed course (up to and including level 3/A levels etc) rather than higher ed, (degree, HNC/HND etc.)
