Calculation

Can anyone clarify please, what the parental contributors would be if, say, 2 children were at uni and the household income of parents was:

£45k per year

£65k per year

Does the same calculation apply for each child? Or is taken into account that Child A is already being supported at uni and so this amount is taken off the household income first before the calculation is made for the second child?

I don't think siblings are taken into account. An small amount is taken off the parental income for dependent children.

It also depend on whether they are living at home, not at home or studying gin London.

On a family income of £45k living away from home they would get a maintenance loan of £6,565 leaving a defecit of £2,638

On a family income of £65k they would get the minimum loan of £4,289 leaving a defecit of £4,914

This may help.

It’s taxable income not household income so any benefits / tax credits etc are not included or any salary sacrifice and pension contributions also taken off before calculation. And I think it was previous tax year. So if your income has gone down you apply with previous year figures and then ask for an adjustment. But they don’t take the sibling contribution into account it’s a small allowance per dependent.

When we applied first time, 5 years ago (the only time we did the full income declaration), the household income would be decreased by £1000 for every other child of the household at university. It didn't matter how many schoolchildren lived in the household. The student may get extra if they have dependants.

It may have changed though - it's hard to tell without doing the whole application. The Save Our Students table gives a rough idea though for your numbers.

(And just as a general point there is no legal obligation on an English parent to make up the "deficit")
