Should University sort this problem out?

DS is in first year of university and is in Halls accommodation. His ethernet/internet socket doesn't work and he is reliant on WiFi to access lectures. He currently has about 60% lectures online and 40% face to face. Problem is that WiFi is dodgy and has a habit of dropping out regularly.

He has asked University to repair the faulty Internet/ethernetbut they are saying no due to Covid.
I am anxious that it is difficult for him to access his learning with a dodgy WiFi connection.
Should he just struggle on as best he can or should he be pressing University to repair the faulty ethernet socket as it is making it hard to attend online lectures?

Of course they should repair it, that's ridiculous!

Is the accommodation owned by the university?
He should make sure whoever owns the accommodation fixes the issue ASAP.

Yes it is a university hall he is in.

Then he needs to go to the SU and kick up a fuss.

Are other people having a problem with the WiFi connection? Does he know what the problem is with the port?

Has he been through troubleshooting with the IT support help desk? It may be something he can resolve himself.

Also are they saying no repair at all, or that it's not a priority? That would not normally be a priority job, so may be on a two week turnaround.

Good idea. Will advise him to do this!

No one else having problems with their ethernet socket. University have tried to troubleshoot problem over phone to no avail. The next step would apparently be to replace socket. Due to Covid, they are not wanting to go on campus to do repairs. Not given a job turnaround time, so possibly won't be fixed for the foreseeable. Wouldn't be so problematic if lectures weren't mainly online.

Campus WiFi should be ok - all my students are managing with home broadband/WiFi rather than the university WiFi.

But he could enquire about whether there are any spaces in the university itself he could use for participating in inline learning where he could plug into an Ethernet socket. Some universities are providing these sorts of spaces for students who don’t have a quite place or stable WiFi in their houses.

That’s ridiculous - to our the learning that he is paying for online then have the accomodation that he’s paying for, which presumably includes bills and internet access, provide a barrier to learning. It’s their problem to sort out, is the Ethernet or internet access written in his contract? If they can’t repair it can they move him to a room where he can access it?
