DD been making best of first few weeks. Has had 14 days isolation due to one of flat mates testing positive. Has only met a few people outside of flat. No face to face lectures. She has been trying so hard but now heading for very high tier restrictions and is v v down. (In Nottingham ) Says she's doing everything she can but it all feels hopeless. Their small plans over next week or so will have to be cancelled. Couple of her friends going home. I know she wants to stay but rather than things getting better, the environment and opportunity is getting worse.

DD is also in a tier 3 area. She hasn't had any face to face sessions yet, they have all switched to online at the last minute. Her halls are catered so there is no kitchen area to meet other people in her household, and the clubs she joined initially have never got off the ground. It is very hard.

I would say bring your dd home but if she wants to stay then I think all you can do is phone often, send treats and hope for things to improve.

My son has just withdrawn from his uni And deferred to next September. All F2F teaching had stopped and his flat of 8 had dwindled to 4. He moved back home and decided to incur a fee for withdrawing rather than spend a year paying for something that he felt wasn’t worth the money! He’s now doing voluntary work and looking for a paid job. The uni were very understanding and helpful, and completely supported his decision. It’s a really difficult time for young people, but they have to work out what’s right for them and get through the best they can, as we all do. Good luck to your daughter OP.

My son's still having a great time and making the most of it. The alternative is to come home and he'd rather stay in his flat with other people his age. Still going out for meals etc. with flat mates so fun to be had.

Finding online learning not ideal but acceptable, quite enjoying 'meeting' people in breakout rooms.

My DS in Manchester is still happy enough in messages to me. He can’t meet anyone outside his flat of 8, and, while nice people, they aren’t natural friends for him. They can’t go to the student bar and he hasn’t had a single F2F teaching session. He’s survived a 14 day isolation. He doesn’t want to come home, though. Nobody in his flat has left, to date.

I’m not sure how they’ll be able to decide who to live with in second year? If he’s not going to live with current flatmates he’ll have to find some other people somehow.

My 2 sons both started uni this September,
DS1 (19) seems to be having a good time and has a good social life with his flatmates and some f 2 f teaching.

DS2 (18) is in a tier 3 area and has not left his flat much - he hasn't gelled with his flatmates , they don't seem to socialise in the flat much at all, and I am quite worried about him as he seems to be spending a lot of time in his room alone... when i ask him , he says he's fine and he'd rather be there - I think he does like his independence ... But I just feel so worried about him and his mental health...

DS in tier 3 from beginning, so to speak, and been through 10 day isolation (positive) in his flat of 12. But 12 is so many that he is able to socialise within his bubble, so plenty of opportunities to "go out", even tho pubs closed. He went to a local football match even. Countryside walks, things to visit.

My ds was in a flat of five which is now a flat of 3 after two of his flat mates have returned home.
He is trying to make the best of it. He is in a tier 3 area as are we so he doesn’t think coming home will be any better.
Feel for these young ones who should be having the time of their lives.

GaribaldiGirl · 27/10/2020 19:33

My DD came home after two weeks and is doing degree online until restrictions lifted considerably (I think two terms at home perhaps?). She is quite happy and enjoying course but obviously not the Uni experience she was looking forward to.

Nettleskeins · 27/10/2020 19:40

DS is genuinely having a good time. Perhaps access to full on partying might have made it more difficult for him to do his academic work, find time for exercise, meet small close-knit group. Who knows.

Nettleskeins · 27/10/2020 22:43

He just told us he has been playing football on a pitch with some flatmates..it must.be going well

DD currently saying she will stay. As long as her flat mates stay and they are still allowed to do sport she's better off there than at home.

Agree it's going to hard deciding on flat mates for next year. Her circle is so small at the moment.

Sorry for all of them - all trying to make best of it whether by coming home or staying.
