DS has got corona, can anyone recommend something nice to send him, maybe a meal kit?

I've found Gousto to have gone down a lot in quality recently so I'm looking for alternatives.

WIWIKAU have lots of ideas but seems to be mainly brownies and sweet stuff

Thanks.

Firstly you need to check that the porters lodge is open and accepting deliveries. At DDs uni they closed down the mail office and were told not to order perishables as they wouldnt be able to collect them.

Luckily he's in a house this year so that will be okay.

You would probably have to go and buy them yourself and post them, as annoyingly, the company doesn't do direct sales to the public, but the 'Spice Tailor' daal kits don't need any added ingredients (apart from rice if you fancy it) They come in 3 or 4 varieties.

Only of any use if he actually likes lentils / chickpeas / spicy food, of courseSmile.

What is the reason for not allowing students to receive post - perishable or otherwise?
MarchingFrogs · 21/10/2020 13:23

If they are self isolating, then they are not allowed outside their household boundary (flat? section of corridor?) into areas shared with other households. Presumably, to get to the mail room - itself a shared area - they would have to go downstairs / along shared corridors etc? Although surely someone (college admin/ the SU or whatever it's called there) could get some kind of system going for student volunteers to take items of post to the threshold of isolating households? Or are there actually colleges where the whole student body is confined to its personal accommodation? How do they get their food at mealtimes?

OP I have a similar situation with my ds. I am arranging a grocery delivery to his house and will include lots of treats in that (initially it was just going to be treats but I will include food, medicine & toiletries to save him having to book a separate delivery).

Needmoresleep · 21/10/2020 13:52

Is there a branck of Cook! nearby. They deliver. Wholesome meals which just need to be reheated, if a tad expensive.

MarchingFrogs · 21/10/2020 14:01

Just realised with mention of 'porters lodge' I was assuming Oxbridge and therefore catered. But the issue of having to go out into shared areas would still apply, re collecting post. No reason, other than lack of willing pairs of hands, for post etc not to be deposited at thresholds, though.

movingonup20 · 21/10/2020 14:03

There's several meal kit companies but most have a week or so lead time to first delivery. I would instead look for an independent butcher or deli, all the ones around here are selling homemade ready meals and kits they put together with free local delivery. Otherwise I suggest Waitrose delivery - their scratch range are kits

OrlandoTheMarmaladeCat · 21/10/2020 14:05

Having the same issue with our son. The only issue with Cook is that the meals require a freezer which isn't always very large. Typically he told me he had the virus on the day he was going food shopping so his shelves were empty (allegedly!) Have sent him an Asda foodshop, his sister is sending him some brownies and I've also sent him a couple of records I think he'll like. Will send gifts periodically and probably more food in a week.

Moominmammacat · 22/10/2020 10:23

Non Oxbridge places do have porters' lodges you know ... not just a hole in the road for the post.

MillicentMartha · 22/10/2020 11:06

Yes, but they aren’t generally called ‘porter’s lodges’ in other universities. Maybe an admin office?

If he can’t face cooking but is still hungry, Cook is a good shout. I’ve been to friends’ houses before and we’ve had a Cook meal rather than getting a takeaway. There was a Moroccan Lamb that was really nice.

Passo do pizza and pasta kits.

Mindful Chef recipes are really lovely and worth a look.

The recipes are really easy to follow - the only think I would say is that they sometimes take a little longer than the recipe card says, but that might be just me!!

Ulpo · 22/10/2020 19:25

I sent him some scratch kits from Waitrose, thanks for all the suggestions.
