Where for Politics?

DS wants to study either Politics & Philosophy, straight Politics or possibly Politics & Social Policy. He doesn’t want Politics & Int Rel.

He’s predicted AAA in 3 solid subjects and has a good gcse profile.

He doesn’t like LSE and isn’t keen on Campus Uni’s like Warwick & Sussex.

He likes Bristol & Queen Mary’s in London a lot and is also considering Manchester & Liverpool is there anywhere else anyone would suggest?

Hull (good sandwich-type program). Essex (great for political science/quantitative research - which is good because quant skills are very saleable).

MarchingFrogs · 03/10/2020 17:47

Essex is campus, though (Politics is at the Wivenhoe site), although there is a new accommodation block in the town centre, on Magdalen Street, very handy for AldiSmile. Not sure exactly where the buses that go past the door go to, but the bus station isn't far away. A friend's DC graduated in Politics from there not so long ago and had their year abroad at a Canadian university, which seems to have bee a big plus point.

York

KingscoteStaff · 04/10/2020 12:59

DS just started Politics and Philosophy at Durham. He also applied to Bristol, Manchester + Newcastle. Durham and Bristol wanted 3 As, Manchester and Newcastle AAB or Astar A C.

KittyMcKitty · 04/10/2020 13:20

Thank you all will look into those suggested- I really like York but sadly he doesn’t share my views.

Edinburgh. However 4 year MA but could study all 3 for two years before deciding on honours subjects.

Uni of Sheffield? High up in rankings for Politics. My son ( now 24) studied History and Politics there - had a great experience - now got a brilliant job in Parliament x

Thank you! Sheffield have AAB as their standard offer for Philosophy & Politics and the course structure is great! Definitely one to consider.

Liverpool is a good choice, great, fun and affordable place to live. Biased as I did my first degree there and DH did Politics there too. Prefer to Manchester but both good choices.

Except according to your other thread he's predicted 3 x Cs....

Hull is well regarded, within reach academically, and offers a placement in Westminster.

Oops sorry@KittyMcKitty got you confused with the OP on another thread Blush

Kings London highly regarded for Politics and International Relations.

Easily done as both after the same course and looking at QMUL. Ds v keen on Queen Mary’s the uni is perfect the only downside is it’s straight politics as opposed to politics & philosophy.

@KittyMcKitty
Sheffield is a city based ( nice part) uni but has two huge student villages within walking distance - so the best of both worlds! They are very supportive and often willing to be flexible with grades if things go wrong!

KittyMcKitty · 04/10/2020 18:49

beryl Sheffield does sound fab! City based is v important to ds - we live in a v small village with no public transport (school is in local town) - lockdown further isolated ds and he had a v rough time and got quite down. He worked v hard to get his grades back up to get the predicted grades he has. Anyway long story short he wants to be in a vibrant city rather then outside of one (eg Sussex).

I read Politics (and Spanish) at Bristol and it was a really great experience.

I also applied to LSE, UCL, Kings and Southampton.

MarchingFrogs · 04/10/2020 21:22

The Superram network in Sheffield would be a thing to marvel at, in that caseSmile.

Birmingham is campus, but definitely not isolated, with lots of buses and only two stops (literally a few minutes) on the train from the University railway station into New Street. The entry requirement for DD's course (IR with French) is currently AAB; Politics is the same.

Invisimamma · 04/10/2020 21:31

Edinburgh!

Guymere · 04/10/2020 22:28

Sheffield is very good for Politics. I highly recommend it. Bristol also. And Exeter - don’t know what grades they want though.

MarchingFrogs · 04/10/2020 22:56

Exeter BA Philosophy and Politics asks for AAA but no specified subjects.
