Vet Med 2022

Still feels ages away but my daughter is hoping to study Vet Med in 2022.
She did a fair amount of work experience prior to lockdown but certainly where we are she can't do any Vet experience and animal husbandry is proving difficult too although that is looking more hopeful.
We did the RVC Virtual Open Day which was interesting and informative. She has no idea yet which Universities she is going to apply to.

It would be lovely to hear from other parents in the same situation.

The Vet Med 2020 post has been really useful.

@follygirl happy to help if I can. DD just started at Bristol but got offers from Liverpool, RVC and Notts. Also visited Surrey. The new one at Aberystwyth looks great (parter is RVC).

Thanks @mumsneedwine your post has been really useful. Your daughter did so well to get 4 offers!
I hope she has a brilliant time at Bristol.

@follygirl so far so good. They don't start teaching for a little bit as got them in early. But she's found lots of vets and loads of info from Uni and vet soc.
Assume yours is year 12 ? For now it's looking at the courses as they differ quite a lot. And then being prepared for all the forms to fill in next autumn - it takes time. They have changed work experience requirements for this year and I expect that will follow through to next. But I'd try and book some for next year anyway.

@mumsneedwine she was working at a Vet prior to lockdown and will return when measures are eased. Another Vet she did a week with when she was 14 has also offered to have her.
She did lambing over a year ago and has that lined up again next Easter. She works at a yard and has already worked at a kennels so we will ask for that again. She did a day at a dairy farm which she will do more of next year. She also fosters hedgehogs. She overwintered one last winter and then she raised 2 hoglets this summer so will carry on doing that.
We’re lucky in that she started so long ago so we have contacts.
She’s just started Year 12 and loving being back at school again.
Would love to chat with you later on about the differences in the courses.

Just ask anything. Totally understand how tough it all is.

AWanderingMinstrel · 23/09/2020 08:05

Mine is at Surrey. Happy to answer any queries etc.

Colliemayhem · 27/09/2020 12:48

AWanderingMistrel We have an invitation to go on a campus tour, but it only seems to be of Stag Hill and only for an hour. Are all lectures etc at Surrey at the Vet School at Manor Park or is it like Bristol for example where most are on the main campus and they just go to the vet school one day a week or so. I can't seem to quite find the information on the web site.

Wolfff · 27/09/2020 14:03

My daughter is in fifth year at Surrey. The vet school building is too small to host all year groups at the same time so some lectures are elsewhere on campus. We had a general tour when we went for open day years ago and it was all modern and of a good standard.

Wolfff · 27/09/2020 14:30

I should also mention, that all the buildings are within walking distance, it is not a question of having to go out of town like Bristol.

To be honest, I thought all the vet schools were similar in onsite facilities. I think you may want to look at the way courses are delivered, exams, other opportunities before making your mind up.

My daughter got into all four of her choices. BUT she put down two she thought were good bets for getting an interview based on her particular strengths (RVC and Liverpool) and two she really liked (Edinburgh and Surrey). She nearly went with Edinburgh but chose Surrey at the last minute.

AWanderingMinstrel · 27/09/2020 16:55

Colliemayhem Yes I agree with Wolff - the facilities at Surrey are all new, both in the labs and teaching facilities. The only thing off campus that I know of were the farming practicals, but this was not often and the university organised transport. My son was lucky he was in accommodation 5 minutes walk from the Vet building and just across from the sports centre. He is going into fourth year next year and is going to see if he can get into the couples accommodation! He particularly liked Surrey as there is a good balance in ages and backgrounds of students, and there is a balance between theory and practice- which he wanted as he wants to be a large animal Vet.

Colliemayhem · 27/09/2020 18:29

Thanks, we will probably sign up for a tour then, DS is keen to see the University in real life rather than just virtually. He really liked Edinburgh and liked that the Vet school was on it’s own self contained campus with all lectures there. He has applied for Surrey, Bristol, Edinburgh and Glasgow. He went to Vetquest last year at Bristol and visited Edinburgh. I am from Glasgow & he knows the city well, so it is only Surrey he hasn’t visited in person yet.

Wolfff · 27/09/2020 19:53

My daughter was also in one of the blocks by the vet school, it was convenient and also near the big Tesco. Nearly everyone moves out after first year and share houses - about the same price or cheaper. You need to start looking before Xmas though. DD is living in London now as she mostly has rotations this year and commutes or stays with a friend if she needs to be in Guildford.

Guildford is not a bad town. Shopping centre, restaurants, clubs etc. If things ever get back to normal....

She has been very happy at Surrey, very nice and supportive cohort, lots of societies and extra curricular stuff and she has made some great friends.

Colliemayhem · 19/10/2020 15:44

Just a quick update and thanks for the advice @Wolfff & @AWanderingMinstrel. We drove down to Surrey yesterday after booking on one of their enhanced campus tours. It was really useful and gave us an appreciation for the setting and campus(es). The tour was of Stag Hill, but we drove round Manor Park and saw that it is very close and the facilities look great. I was on the tour with DS while DH had a wander on his own as only one of us could go on the tour. He was asked by a student if he was ok, they got chatting and turns out the chap was a 5th year Vet student so he was able to get some really useful information. DS received the Surrey questionnaire this morning, so will be setting to that & the others this week.

Hi everyone, I hope this message comes at a good time. I'd like to gauge some interest for a project I'm working on if that's ok.

I'm a final year vet student and I've had loads of questions from prospective applicants regarding the course and life at university in general. Would it be useful to have a Facebook Live session with a panel of students from each vet school to ask all of your questions to? Would be great to know how useful this would be for aspiring vets Smile

Hello all, I'm currently at Liverpool university and will be going into my 3rd year of vet med in September. If anyone has any questions about personal statements, UCAS or the application process, feel free to message me :)
