UCAT Exam Scotland - Help

Mummykins54 · 12/09/2020 12:54

My daughter wants to do medicine and she is sitting her UCAT at the end of September.

She is already finding the exam extremely challenging and has convinced herself that she is going to fail.

Just looking for any advice/tips that I can pass onto her from people who have already sat the exam. She is looking at applying to all of the Scottish unis who do the medical degree.

Thanks in Advance

Medify. And practice. Practice. And then do some more. Time is tight so if not sure flag, and move on. It's a horrible test !

Aren't there more than 4 medical schools on Scotland (Edinburgh, Gladgow, Aberdeen, St Andrews, Dundee, ...?).

You can only name 4 on the UCAS form, then either apply for something else (most people go for Biomedical Sciences, I think) for the fifth slot, or leave it unused.

My DD sat it today and did better than she had dared to hope (2720) - Medify has definitely been her friend for the last few weeks. And absolutely what @mumsneedwine said - flag the tricky ones and get as many of the others done as possible first. Good luck!

Well done to your girl Superjaggy. Fab score. Will pass that on. It's a shame she's demented with it.

It's such a difficult exam

@Mummykins54 it's an absolutely awful test and DD really did not enjoy preparing for it.

But the only way is to practice. Lots of questions, then mocks and don't just mindlessly do mock after mock, go back and see where you went wrong and learn from it.

DD used Medify and also Medentry and the free official mocks. She found it useful having a couple of different platforms.

The trick is definitely to triage the questions - so flag and move on if it's taking too long. DD found it so hard to begin with, especially abstract reasoning, however after lots of practice this was her highest scoring subsection in the end!

Your DD just needs to keep at it and not give up and it will come, and it will start to get easier. I do feel for you though. The weeks leading up to DD's exam were not easy.

If your DD has any specific questions about subsections or anything at all, let me know and I can ask my DD for her.

Another vote for Medify - my DS found it v useful. He subscribed for one month and did an hour or so every day during that time (much more than that and he felt he was going around in circles overthinking things)...good luck to your DD🤞!

Thanks for the replies.

She is really struggling with it. Just hope it all comes good on the day.
