UCAT

DD has just sat her UCAT test and on her way home now.
She is chuffed with her score. Feels she has done really well. I have to admit I do not fully understand the ins and outs but I’m not as sure as she is that her score is going to be enough for applying to do medicine. I want to be happy with her when she gets home. Her Dad has. Bit of a habit of building her up so I’m worried she has not done as well as she thinks. Equally, I don’t want to look like a miserable old bat when she comes in happy.
For what it’s worth, I’m proud of her and a not so good pass isn’t my issue. I just want to pitch my reaction accordingly.
Her total was 2690. I thought 2700 was considered “good enough” for medicine.

Thoughts ? Don’t flame me, I’m really not sure what to think.

It might well be enough. St George's (possibly the 'easiest') wanted 2480 this year.

LaLaFlottes · 28/08/2020 16:43

She definitely has plenty of options. Especially if she has good GCSEs too?

It's all about applying strategically - so that's a decent score, but there will be some very UCAT heavy Unis that it might not work for, but plenty where they use GCSE's and UCAT combined.
There is a great thread on the Student Room where you can post your stats and get suggestions from the experts.

Take a look - but it's definitely worthy of celebration and she's definitely still in the game.

It's a fantastic score. It's on the cusp of getting her into lots of places but is definitely good enough for many. Be proud of her. It's a hideous exam and anyone getting above 2400 has done well. Now she needs to apply strategically 😊

Thank you for comments and info. I will relax again for now. X

That is a good score, which will give her plenty of options. DS scored 2640 last summer, applied strategically, got three offers and got his place to study medicine 😃

Card1gan · 28/08/2020 23:15

Can I ask where your DS applied @Hattifatteners? My DD has a similar UCAT score and is trawling through Uni websites trying to work out where she has the best chance of an interview. Thanks.

Your daughter should be very proud of her UCAT score @Cheeseismymiddlename - it's an impossible exam!

Hattifatteners · 29/08/2020 09:17

@Card1gan he applied to Nottingham, Leicester, UEA and Kent. Kent rejected him pre interview and we never really managed to work out their selection criteria. He had offers from others. Probably worth mentioning that he had full GCSE scores for Nottingham and Leicester.

Cheeseismymiddlename · 29/08/2020 10:17

Hi Hattie. That’s encouraging. Glad your son had good offers. My DD GCSE grades were all 8/9’s and she too is applying to Birmingham UEA and Leicester . Maybe Cardiff as No.4 . She’s a bit worried about Leicester as that’s he first choice and thinks her score might have needed to be a little bit higher.
Thank you for your post.

Late to the party as always but this might be useful for anyone else looking at UCAT scores the Uni's accept and understanding them better.

This one explains how each uni uses the UCAT score.

www.medify.co.uk/blog/ucat-2020-interim-results-are-out-how-good-is-my-ucat-score
This one is good for understanding how the overall scoring works and how that impacts admissions/getting offers for interview.

Also, UCAT is scored based on the overall achievement that year so there isn't really a set standard for "good enough".

I hope she is doing well!
