Studying Medicine question

LillyM50 · 22/08/2020 13:52

Hello,

My DD wants to study medicine and is only just going to sixth form. During her interview she was advised to take Chemistry, Biology and Maths. She's also decided to take Further maths because she enjoys it.

I want to guide her in her applications but my understanding in this field is close to zero. I read she will have to take different tests depending on which uni she applies to.

Does the school arrange this or is this something DD has to plan herself? Do sixth form normally guide university applications? I want to guide her but have no idea where to start. Any advice is welcome. Thank you.

Actually, I think the opposite, they cancelled the September BMAT this year, so it is only in November.

But for LillyM50's DD, that is irrelevant, as she would not sit it this year. Next year presumably they will go back to offering two sittings, one in Aug/Sept and one in November.

There is no September BMAT this year because of COVID 19 @Powergower

Sorry if I confused you! OP's DD is only 16 so I was speaking in general terms as if life were normal...

Sorry it was me that got it all confused!

Hello all, can I please pop back and ask another question.

So far no luck with medical work experience. She was recommended to take the BSMS Virtual Work Experience instead by several replies. She completed this but is super keen to be hands-on. She's now applying to volunteer elsewhere and meanwhile will keep trying on the medical front.

DD asked me to buy some resourced for her to start practising for the BMAT and UCAT tests. She think online resources (test questions etc) might be more beneficial. I am not sure. Any recommendations or tips please? Thank you Smile

@LillyM50 try getting paid job at a cate home. Most will hire over 16s as restaurant or activity staff.

Regarding the UCAT, many of us used something called Medify, which are an online practice tests. I believe there is a competitor out there called something like Medentry. Can't speak for the latter, but DS used Medify. Probably a little early to be practicing, given that your DD will want to be taking it over next summer, but you can certainly have a look at it now. At the moment I would probably suggest your DD get going on her A levels, and settle into those, there is time next year to start practicing - but it is definitely important to practice, and in the build up to the exam something like Medify is very helpful. I don't know so much about the BMAT. DS decided that he mostly wanted UCAT universities as a preference, and that it was not worth taking the BMAT for one possible university that might have otherwise been in his top selection, so his UCAS form is about to go in with four UCAT ones, and he is not sitting the BMAT.
