Hi DS 21yr, has applied for a Masters degree, we just found out he cannot get a tuition loan but a maintainance loan (which could be used for the tuition?) Does anyone know what amount this would go up to please? What the possible options are. Thanks.

Think mine got £10,500 a few years ago ... and you are paying back at 15% rather than 9%

It's £11,200 ish. Paid direct to the student so fees will have to come out of it. May or may not be enough!

And it's a fixed amount. Not means tested.

Yes repayments made alongside UG loan repayments, so 9% for UG plus 6% for PG, as the pp said, taking you to 15% of salary above £25k in repayments.

May or may not be enough!

Perhaps I'm just a little cynical, but I get the vague impression that institutions have pitched fees at round about the 'only just, if you're lucky' level since the introduction of the universal loan?

DS1 will have c.£1500 left over from paying the fees for his course (admittedly a taught MSc with some lab type activities). I have now committed myself to an impoverished old age by saying I'll chip in (because I can hardly deny the other two the same offer), but I have suggested that if he intends to do a PhD, one where there is a better-directed institutionapplicant flow of money would be a good idea.

True most are set at the loan amount! Although a lot of that is because Gov funding for Masters courses has been withdrawn.

Science PhDs are usually research council funded btw with a decent ish stipend Wink But yeah we've agreed to fund the oldest through an MSc so I guess we've inadvertently committed to doing the same for the other one Confused
