Clearing

Last Thursday, DD missed her first choice by a mile and was rejected; she accepted her insurance straight away and booked accommodation.

When she received CAGs, they still fell short of her first choice but now she is only one grade out.

Once she had her new grades she emailed the Head of Admissions directly, alongside trying to get through on the phones, and received a reply saying that her new grades still weren't good enough and that they wouldn't reconsider - fair enough.

But we are new to all of this and, given that the course is still in clearing (at full original grade requirement) is it worth trying again?

Surely they would rather have a known quantity, with high marks in the professional exam required for the course, rather than someone who is applying through clearing?

I'm hoping someone more knowledgeable can guide us - give up or try again?

I was also wondering whether we can expect some movement in clearing next week, once people give up insurance and clearing offers in favour of their first choice. Or maybe that's wishful thinking!

If she's already asked giving her new grades and they've said no then that's it. Sorry.

Realistically by the time they get the CAGs next week it probably will be full with people who have now made the grade.

Embrace the offer she has and move on!

If she still hasn't got the grades for the course as currently advertised in clearing I think the above is your answer I'm afraid.

other kids whose grades improved due to CAG will mop up those spare places for the course that went into clearing.

Very small courses are struggling a lot this year to be sure to run, because so many people are going to get grades good enough for their first choice.

I thought so. Thanks everyone. It seems such a shame to miss out for one grade, when it's still in clearing (AAB course, she's got ABB).

Particularly galling when she's been getting As throughout Y12/13 in one of those B subjects and has no idea why it isn't an A, yet it's stopping her from doing the course she's wanted to do for years, at the uni she's wanted to attend for years (near family).

Oh well. As you say, embrace the insurance offer.
