DS1 and DS2 (18 & 19) are both starting different uni’s in September , there’s a lot to do plus i’m stressing already !

Please can anyone offer any advice on having 2 or more DC’s starting Uni at the same time and how they coped with it, worry wise and financially?

TIA

Yes, and at opposite ends of the country. Advice ... get them to do as much themselves as you can and if you do need to take them back make sure you have a day off driving in between. I had it for two years and it wasn't really an issue.

Financially, not a problem for us.

Worry wise ... just the usual old issues, they come and they go.

Good luck!

Yes, my twin daughters in 2017! Two shopping trips; which inevitably overlapped. Their main issue was buying clothes, as they share so much. At first the phone calls and everything drove me mad, but luckily they started a weekend apart- DD3 went first, which was food, as DD4 is more anxious so could ask questions. The biggest issue was the endless laundry when they arrived home at Xmas. We’re lucky to have two parents who drive, but when my older ones were at uni at the same time (different years), I alternated ‘first pick’ of days to collect and drop off when their end dates coincided. We had to pay for DS2 to have an extra night in halls as DD2 came down with something- the joys of big families!

I've had several years with three or four all at uni although they've all been at the same place, which helped considerably. This year I have one starting undergrad, one a masters and one a PhD, but at least the first two are at the same place and the other only an hour or so on - could be worse. They all have huge loans but have gone down the think of it as a grad tax not a debt route, which helps.

All 3 of ours are going away in Sept.
DD to do a second degree after 2 years of working.
DS back to uni after lockdown (year2)
DS2 off to start year one.
Its going to be quiet here.

Twins about to start uni, at opposite ends of country (one very far north, one Midlands, we live in South East) and with same date to move in! I haven't got my head round the logistics but suspect it will involve a very over-packed car and at least one night in a hotel somewhere!
DS returning for 3rd year. Eldest has just graduated, so at least that's one out of the four who won't need student finance topped up by the Bank of Mum and Dad!

Yes my 2 sons both started last September oldest 22 youngest 19.
Buying all the stuff for both was expensive and lots of driving to get them to different places, also both only get min maintenance allowance so it’s costing us about £15,000 a year to support them.
The older one lives in a more expensive place and goes out a lot so runs out of money. The younger one doesn’t go out much and doesn’t spend all his money.
We’ve had to pay out for deposits for second year flats, one was £500 which we won’t get back for at least a year, other was £350.
I worry about the younger one (for lots of reasons) don’t worry about the older one, being older (and having worked before going to uni) he’s much more worldly and can take care of himself, although he does need to either get a p/t job or stop going out so much (but maybe Covid will put a stop to that anyway).
The strangest thing for us was becoming empty nesters in one go.

My DD1 'dropped' out on uni during her first year and started a new course & new uni at the same time as DD2 started uni. Both at Northern universities so visited each other by train quite a lot. It was strange and expensive having 2 'freshers'. We moved DD1's stuff in on a Friday evening but then she came home with us as she wanted to come with us to move DD2 in to her halls the next day. We then came home from DD2's university via DD1's university and dropped her off on the Saturday night! They have now both graduated - DD1 last year after 3 years and DD2 this year after 4 years. DD1 is currently back home as she is working from home at the moment. DD2 moves out in a couple of weeks to start her new job. I am looking forward to financial freedom soon I hope!

My twins both went to Bristol. However they were in different halls (Wills and Churchill) and different subjects so one had a field trip for the 2 days before term started for his subject which was good for bonding on the course and he had to arrive 2 days early so I drove them separately a few days apart. The other one was not prepared to arrive early when there was no need. As it was such a big step for them both I was happy to do the same journey a few days apart. In fact this coming term one will be in Bristol and one London so will be the first time ever they have lived apart in terms of towns.

Empra123 · 21/08/2020 18:06

Yes my twins. One at York one at Exeter. And me in the middle in London! York twin is pretty self sufficient and has got on with things on her own mostly. Exeter twin is autistic - sickeningly bright but socially not so good. So has needed much more help in getting stuff.

DT have just finished their degrees from York and Warwick although DS is going back to do his Masters whilst DD moves to Brussels to start work. Luckily they started consecutive weeks in their first year so we did a lot of driving (we’re in central London).

They have both been good at keeping in regular touch throughout the term. Financially Uni hasn’t been much different from school as they have been at a fee paying international school since they were five. Just now have DS to fund through his Masters and then they can support themselves!
