I thought you were asking about ecology. The thread title is not clear.

Ah sorry..in haste! I meant Economics!

Experiences of placements at any of these universities would be welcome as well as graduate outcomes. All of them say we have x % of students working within 6 months - but how many are working in their own field of study (and not Macdonalds for example!).

I thought you meant ecology too. I have no idea about Aston or Cardiff, but I'd be very surprised if someone with a good economics degree from Sheffield would end up working in McDonalds, even in the current financial climate.

In fact, LMGTFY - here is some data about outcomes for Sheffield economic graduates www.theuniguide.co.uk/university-of-sheffield-s18/courses/economics-ba-hons-2020-d6218841333b

Thank you Saskia - this is helpful.

What is she interested in? Sheffield will give her a more traditional, well-rounded economics experience, while Cardiff and Aston's strengths are more in the business side of economics.

Thank you Phphion. Business side is more what she is interested in but she is not averse to keeping her options open. In fact, the course structure at Aston and Sheffield is broadly similar. Aston offer a compulsory placement year which is appealing although Sheffield and Cardiff also offer optional sandwich years. Never been to Sheffield/know anyone personally who's gone to uni there. Does anyone have any thoughts on Sheffield as a university city? Negatives? Positives? Experience of Economics department at the uni there?

Where do you live? How close to home does your DD want to be? How will she travel to the uni of her choice? Our offspring chose Cambridge and Birmingham. Both accessible by us for the day so we could take them there and visit occasionally and take them out for lunch. Travel home by train was affordable and they could get home quickly in a family emergency (and we had a couple). Then you need to consider the course on offer ......

Of those three I would personally go for Sheffield as the uni with the better overall reputation & a nice city with lots going on. People who have studied there are always very positive about it. As long as the course structure is what they want.
