Southampton: I know I could search - I will - but timing pressures/adjustment: VIEWS

Hi - our A Level journey has been ok - not great, not bad, but OK. There is a v short opportunity to adjust upwards to Southampton (Philosophy) for which it well ranked. Does anyone have any views?

Bizarrely, I went to school there many years ago, so I know the area but literally nothing re the university as however good I wouldn’t have gone there because it was local.

Would be hugely grateful for any views.

It was DDs insurance because the course was spot on and - surprisingly for her- she didn't take straight against it as soon as she got out of the carGrin. Bit if a trek for us which was the biggest negative. Nice mix of campus and nearby affordable off site accommodation and a bit of town life. Students seem to rely on buses to get around but they seem frequent and affordable. People who know it seem to have a real soft spot.
TEF silver if that matters to you. Probably depends on the course.

The campus is lovely (visit valley gardens if you come). Halls are close by. There's a good mix of students and a wide range of clubs and societies.

Gymntonic · 16/08/2020 22:02

Also I think they'll guarantee you accommodation. They certainly did for insurance students. Halls a ten minute walk from main campus or some in town. Sports facilities a bit away from campus but buses sort that easily enough. Traffic not horrendous. It felt a bit like York, Nottingham and Birmingham to me - discernable campus but proper town nearby too.

catshavestaff · 16/08/2020 22:19

The gym and pool are on campus. Most halls are self catered, some in the city centre and some walking distance of campus. Campus has lots of trees and greenery. City council has invested a lot in cycle paths recently so easy to get around on bike and foot as well as on bus. Bus pass included in hall fee for university halls.

DD1 insured it last year and really couldn't choose between that and Durham-she only put them that way round as Durham offer was higher.

I think Gym is right in that they guarantee everyone accommodation.

Gymntonic · 16/08/2020 22:45

@catshavestaff is absolutely correct about the pol and gym being in the central campus. Sports pitches are further out.

Sounding v positive, thx.

We are having a “journey”. It’s fun times having an “easygoing” DS Confused

DS recently finished at soton. Nice campus feel as well as city nearby. Well organised uni. DS did really well there.

If they buy the full sports pass, they can do things like sailing and SUP as they have a centre on both the sea and on the River Itchen. An added bonus if that's your thing.

TawnyPippit · 17/08/2020 10:39

Ah spababe, that info may be the clincher!

Thx all for the advice. No idea what will happen, but let’s see what today brings.

No idea but I went for a day out wandering around Southampton last year and loved it. Very jealous!
