The Cambridge Brew house pub is good near to Jesus College on King st. Me and my teenage DD always go there for fish finger sandwiches.
Coffee from Savinos near to the bus station and John Lewis.

Dont bother with The Eagle. yes, its got history but its a shite pub.

the car parks have also been reduced to 1 pound an hour. Usually they are extortionate

Cambridge is lovely to wander round and look at the colleges. It has several museums, all sadly shut at the moment except for the Fitzwilliam which you have to book online for.

There are a lot of places to eat - agree, Eagle is only worth it to see the RAF stuff otherwise it's rubbish. The Cambridge Chop House is always reliable as is Pint Shop. Or you can go out to Grantchester for cream teas at the Orchard Garden Tea Room which is v popular on a hot day.

Thank you for the replies and good news re the car parking!

Aromi is an amazing Sicilian cafe but I don't know how on earth they would function with social distancing but definitely worth a try.

Not in the centre of town but the botanical gardens are always gorgeous (and are also near a French patisserie run by a French couple that's genuinely like visiting France - called Maison Clement).

Jack's gelato is also good (though aromi do gelato too).

There's also an excellent selection of museums but I haven't been post Covid. I used to light the modern art museum which is called kettle's yard. Their permanent exhibition is a man's house and I used to like it because it had loads of seats and was designed to be viewed sitting down but again not sure how Covid has impacted that.

I think the £1/hour parking situation is temporary, to get people back into the city. Cambridge is dead at the moment!

Malbecfan · 16/08/2020 11:45

I'm not sure if it's open at the moment but we like Fitzbilly's for lunch or afternoon tea. It's just along the road from Kings, Corpus etc. There is another cafe whose name I have forgotten on the road just down from the Tourist Information centre. It might even be next door. You can sit outside there. We haven't been to Cambridge since early June to collect DD's stuff and that was very much a flying visit.

AnnaMagnani · 16/08/2020 12:47

We v much like Jack's gelato too and that is definitely open!

Cambridge is really suffering without the students and the Chinese tourists. We used to moan about them all the time but now it looks like a ghost town and it must be a worry for a lot of businesses. The market looks on it's knees.

Thanks for all suggestions :)

I have to say i'm loving Cambridge without the tourists.

Penguin007 · 16/08/2020 13:36

It's certainly easier to negotiate the market and shops, but it feels dead. The shops can't survive for long like this. I hope it picks up when the new term starts.

OhYouBadBadKitten · 16/08/2020 21:11

We like the Architect pub, partly because it was slightly out of the way of tourists. We haven't been back since March. It must be very odd.

The botanical gardens are very lovely.

Jack's Gelato now has a second location too.

Don't forget to go Punting
