Did your A Level dc get their centre assessed grade?

My ds got his 'A' Level results but not his centre assessed grades. My understanding was that students would be given both sets of results. Was anyone given birth sets or did you request the cag separately?

ThankyouPeter I have been scratching my head trying to work this one out. What you have said explains my DC's very strange set of results. It also explains why my DC's school is reluctant to discuss rankings and have removed previous years' subject results from their website! It also explains why 40% of students' teacher assessed grades have apparently been ignored!

Gymntonic · 15/08/2020 14:44

We've had to request CAGs and haven't received them yet

thatone · 15/08/2020 14:46

Thank you for those petitions cmanni.

Good luck to everyone challenging unfair downgrading.ThankyouPeter this is why, even though my ds was happy with his grades I feel that they were down to luck and chance and that is not how it should be.

thatone "I feel that they were down to luck and chance and that is not how it should be." - they were down to how the teacher ranked them and how the school performed in the past. Aka a popularity contest and a postcode lottery!

There are a couple of other threads running where posters have linked to the analysis of the algorithm used. They are well worth a read although it is totally shocking. It also explains why some students have been awarded a grade U despite the school not having anyone receive a U in the previous years. If the computer says someone should get a U then the lowest ranked student will be awarded that grade even if they were a grade C student. If you are interested then have a look at the higher education board and scroll through to find the links - probably easiest to start at the end and work backwards as the threads have been running since before results day.

Yes students could request them and got them emailed back quickly. They made this decision a few days before as until then guidance had been they should not be shared (which I can understand as teachers would potentially have received threats and abuse if they gave a low grading). However as it became clear that CAGS would in almost every case be the same or higher than the received grade then it made sense to share that info with disappointed pupils so they knew it was the system that had downgraded them and could ask the school to appeal. School is not releasing rankings without SAR because in small classes this would potentially mean other children’s data being breached. They will probably release rank or at least an indication for larger class sizes if sar made. In a small class most students could guess others ranking if they knew their own as they usually know who is top and bottom and can then figure out the middle group as well.

As a teacher who thought long and carefully about the CAGs as did all my colleagues, I find the implication of a lack of professionalism in my judgement frankly offensive. Do you really think so little of your children’s teachers that you believe they just ranked the students based on how much or how little they liked them? Really?? FFS.

Those rankings took hours and hours and hours of data collection, calculation, discussion and reflection to try to ensure the fairest possible outcome for our students on what has been an utterly shitty year. Don’t blame us for what Ofqual did with that information.

Shame on you.

Can anyone explain why my DD got HIGHER grades than her CAG ? When every one of her friendship group at the same school got lower ? I thought an algorithm was being used .

DD predicted ACD and got A* B C . Obviously not complaining and she's thrilled (she really didn't deserve the C) I am just baffled . Her best friend has CAG of ABB and got CCD

There appears no logical reasoning. Any teachers out there who can explain why ? For no other reason except genuine curiosity.

Divoc2020 · 15/08/2020 18:45

@disorganisedsecretsquirrel Presumably those results and CAGs were in different subjects though?

One explanation would be that your DDs subjects were ones where the school got very strong results last year (higher than was predicted for this year) and in subjects where there were more than 15 entries?

As I understand it, if the previous school year had, say, 20% A; 30% A; 40% B etc the algorithm allocated the same grade proportions across this years' students. So if there were no, or fewer than 20% A CAGs then your DD would be pulled up from the top of the A grades into an A*.

She has been very fortunate though, as the % of students seeing an increase over CAGs was very low!

Toptotoeunicolour · 15/08/2020 19:09

We were given the CAGs at the same time as the results. DS downgraded twice, didn't get first choice, we went through clearing to get something he likes a bit better than his insurance. School have confirmed they are appealing, they have been supportive and open. They have the past three years results on the website by subject anyway. First choice gave no leeway on the conditional offer, but said if appeal were successful he would have a confirmed place for 2021.

Please sign petitions. We need to help our young else there will be a massive mental health fallout.

DD got CAGs a day later. College were initially saying end of Friday but obviously realised students needed them to talk to clearing. She was put down one grade in two and two grades in one. Went from stellar results to perfectly respectable but originals made her opt for insurance despite being accepted by first choice via ucas. I’m happy for her as she kept dithering but reactions from other parents seems to be a bit Confused as she’s now not going to an RG uni. I hope out that once out the other end she won’t think she should have gone for first choice. She’s v fortunate to have been in this position and having a choice but in ordinary year she might has gone for adjustment or seen what was out there.
Hope that all unis get the support and money to give places to everyone who were initially rejected but now have the needed grades via CAGs and appeals

Cafeconleche · 15/08/2020 20:23

@lanadelgrey your DD and my DS could be twins... he decided on results day to turn down his firm (Manchester) and accept his insurance (UEA). He was torn but decided that, on balance, he’d probably have a better student experience on a proper campus. Plus he loved both courses equally, so even if he hadn’t had the choice, he would have been very happy with his insurance. We also had a few HmmConfused reactions ourselves for turning down a RG university, but I happen to think that the whole RG thing is a bit of a marketing con. I’m also a little Wink biased as I went to UEA myself way back in the dark ages when the university choices were limited to Oxbridge, Redbrick or Plate Glass. Durham and Exeter only became RG universities in 2012 and St Andrew’s and Bath still aren’t. Anyway, I’m delighted that my DS has had a choice, unlike so many of his mates and unlike so many other DC who have been absolutely shafted by this whole sorry mess.

disorganisedsecretsquirrel · 15/08/2020 21:28

Thank you Divorc2020 that makes complete sense .. school is very 'churchy my and gets great RE results .. which was one of her upgrades .. the other was an art subject again , very strong .. and an upgrade.. the other was what she was predicted .

Thanks for the explanation. It seems she just got lucky with subject choices !

K80mat · 31/05/2021 21:21

Hi just wondering if you all managed successful appeals last year?

FlyingSquid · 02/06/2021 22:53

I don’t think it really applies, K80mat, as in the end the results reverted to the centre-assessed grades.

There may have been a few appeals, but not many.
