Uni accomodation

So, DS is about to go back for his 3rd year at uni. He left his last student accomodation which he shared with 3 course mates in March just before lockdown.
He is an extremely introverted character, lots of neurosis and has difficulty making friends.
He is now trying to contact he old housemates to sort accomodation for September (left it late, we know). One of them contacted him last week with house details that seemed perfect but the other person wouldn’t commit. Since then radio silence, DS has tried to contact them but they are not returning his calls and WhatsApp messages are not being delivered. So DH and I think he’s being ghosted.
Don’t know why I’m posting, just so stressed and worried about him.

Can he return to halls of residence for his final year? My university had certain flats that were for 2nd/3rd/4th year students and non-freshers were grouped together.

Halls are pretty sociable so he may find it easier making friends if he's surrounded by lots of other people also looking to make friends.

That is a possibility. Honestly I wouldn’t have thought a person could have such different children. DD is a social butterfly, picks up friends wherever she goes but DS really struggles. He has a real fear of being knocked back so will very rarely initiate meeting friends. He’s such a worry.

Are there any private student halls of residence where he is? Can be expensive for what you get space wise but if he is introverted, a studio set-up may suit him? You can usually book on line but do insist on knowing the size of the room before doing so based on my DC's recent experience.

Private studio halls can be great, but can equally be very isolating, depending on how many good friendships he has at uni, how often he's likely to be out socialising and how often he'll be in uni for lectures etc. It can be much easier in studio flats to become shut off and to see nobody, potentially for days, and I'd say thats even more likely this year due to covid.

If he is an introvert, he would probably benefit from solo accommodation if you can afford it. It would give him the respite he needs and allow him to be social when he prefers.

Is he on his uni/course/overheard Facebook group? There's often at this time of year people deciding not to return to their next year and leaving their housemates in the lurch and advertising for a replacement.

Just to update, he has managed to find a room in a shared house near his campus, so although he is with new people again, he’s much happier now that accomodation is sorted. Phew.
