Oxbridge 2020 (thread 10) - the path to the first term (just one slight hurdle to clear first)

For better or worse, there is a bit of a bond of mutual experience between parents whose DC go through the Oxbridge application process. Thank you for your companionship so far - and thank you to others who started the earlier threads in this series.

This thread should take us to the start of the first term (whatever form that takes). All welcome here, but for many of us hopefully this will be the place for practical support as we help prepare these peculiar* young adults to spread their wings.

But the first item on the agenda appears to be the small matter of judgement...

*or for those who chose Oxford, very peculiar.

What a relief, well done!!! So nice for you not to be hanging on all weekend. And very convenient to get the email at a time when it really isn't too early to crack open a celebratory bottle of wine! Hope others get good news too.

So how does he feel about the C? Fine because he's in now or irritated that it will be on his CV?

Cliff1975 · 14/08/2020 16:56

He will appeal the C - seems likely it will go up and needs to appeal with the cohort too as they were all downgraded but its academic now really - C for Covid as a permanent reminder I guess!!!!!!!!!!!

I know everyone could think this but I am so pleased because he is so right for it. Good luck to everyone on here wherever your Ds and DD go - they are all stars.

That's such interesting news about Worcester College honouring all offers. According to the Twitter comments people are expecting some other colleges to follow suit. I wonder if Oxford can accommodate all offer holders? I did note that on their webpage they are saying that people who missed their offers but get results overturned on appeal may have to wait until 2021 to start.

doadeer · 14/08/2020 17:10

I just text my brother saying check your email NOW and he has an offer!!!! no details yet of the college, but they said they wanted to let him know

I'm so so happy! I'm so glad they told them before the weekend

hobbema · 14/08/2020 17:10

great news @Cliff1975.

hobbema · 14/08/2020 17:11

And you DB @doadeer, What a great end to the week.

SnapSnapDragon · 14/08/2020 17:12

That's fantastic @doadeer. Enjoy your weekend!!!

JulesJules · 14/08/2020 17:16

Brilliant news @Cliff1975 !
Was coming on to post the news from Worcester College as above - hope more colleges will follow suit, I'm guessing there will be real practical considerations in terms of how many offers they made and have they got room for them all.

monkeyonthetable · 14/08/2020 17:16

@Cliff1975 that's wonderful news. So many sad tales of ruinous grades. This has really made me happy!

sandybayley · 14/08/2020 17:18

@doadeer - amazing news. Well done little bro.

Cliff1975 · 14/08/2020 17:21

@doadeer so pleased for you !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I saw your message, I had just come off the phone to him he was trying to distract himself and we were talking about the fact that it wouldn't be bad at all if he came to UCL in London near me. I messaged him saying check your emails right now and he called me right back!

It's the college he wanted too.

I bet you will enjoy a glass of something nice tonight!!!

SnapSnapDragon · 14/08/2020 17:24

Interesting that Worcester are choosing to honour all offers regardless of CAGs. Maybe they think there's a chance that the CAGs are unfair as well as the moderation?

Oxfordsnotbrogues · 14/08/2020 17:25

Worcester College have announced that they will now confirm the places all their undergrad offer-holders irrespective of whether they met their offer or not. Oxford alumni have a petition going on Twitter urging all the colleges to do likewise, and to defer offers if they haven't the room. I have signed it - I have no idea whether it will work, but many of us Oxford alumni are deeply concerned about the situation and have written to our colleges. Outliers - precisely the kinds of students Oxford claim to want - seem to have been absolutely hammered by the algorithm. I have every sympathy with Admissions Tutors, who are in an invidious position, but I hope that my university will show leadership and compassion and do the right thing by these poor students who have suffered enough already.

DadDadDad · 14/08/2020 17:32

Well done to @doadeer, @Cliff1975 !

Cliff1975 - do you mind me asking what subject?

Someone (a lurker) has also messaged me to say their DS missed AAA by one grade but Oxford has taken them.

Very relieved to hear about the pool places! At least you can finally relax and celebrate the wonderful results properly (even a C in these times is an achievement...).

DD is waiting until Monday to start thinking about whether to try and defer or not. She’s just enjoying the weekend now, which I think she deserves.

ofteninaspin · 14/08/2020 17:47

So very pleased for @Cliff1975’s DS and @doadeer’s little bro’ 😃. Have a great weekend.

flowerrful · 14/08/2020 18:00

We've had no news from the pool. I'm imagining someone emailing the Admissions team in an unhurried way in a couple of days' time to tell them to notify UCAS that DC is rejected.

flowerrful · 14/08/2020 18:00

By which time there'll be no accommodation left at the insurance uni...

doadeer · 14/08/2020 18:01

@flowerrful agh that's so stressful 😔

flowerrful · 14/08/2020 18:30

Yes. Feeling pessimistic.

flowerrful · 14/08/2020 18:32

Must be a really tough situation for the colleges too. Things changing all the time.
