Massive U turn just announced. Scotland will now stick with teacher assessed grades. How will universities fit in the extra numbers? What are the implications for English students?

We're all sitting here sweltering going OMG....

How will Scottish unis manage the extra students?! Goodness knows.

Anyone English who wanted to go to Scotland and hasn't met their grade won't be going I'm afraid. Clearing will be virtually non existent I'd imagine in Scotland.

Watch Scottish unis rocket up the league tables in 2022 with those massive tariff scores....

ClerkMaxwell · 11/08/2020 16:22

I presume Scottish unis were consulted and happy to take extra students this year. Many like Glasgow and Edinburgh will have lost lots of international students so will have space. I suspect they will still welcome rUK students with their £9+k fees. Next year they can give more conditionals on S6 results if they need to but with Brexit I suspect the European numbers will be much down plus might still be a few years until all the internationals return.

Hadn't even thought about the league tables.

Feel the current Yr12s may be hit badly if loads of students choose to defer due to the pandemic, safe in the knowledge that they've banked good results.

As far as I am aware, there will be no league tables this year, for obvious reasons!

justaweebit · 11/08/2020 16:26

I'm still in shock! However, the Scottish unis are strictly controlled/limited in the numbers of Scottish students they can take.....not sure how many 'over offer' and hope for the exams to reduce numbers who finally take up places. It'll be interesting to see how many students this affects....

torpidcrystals · 11/08/2020 16:28

There will be a lot of pressure on the rest of the UK to follow suit if the same thing happens with the A levels.

Aurea · 11/08/2020 16:31

The Scottish government is making funding available for extra places for Scottish students.

They weren't you know!
Cheetahfajita · 11/08/2020 17:43

They'll have to do the same in England too surely?

Peaseblossom22 · 11/08/2020 18:29

So if they do the same in England not only will this years cohort be subject to all diets if Covid restrictions but they will be in sn over crowded year as well . All the careful plans to teach more in small groups etc will be blown out of the water by the fact that they will have more students than expected so moving to more online

Hahahahahaha… You have an awful lot of misplaced faith there.
