Any LOs planning on staying home and studying remotely in 2020/2021?

DNephew lives in N. York and has an offer (Computer Science) for University of Edinburgh.

DSis believes university accommodation will be a waste of money next semester as most will be online. If DN makes his offer, the plan is that he will remain at home and do the first semester online.

Will this be even feasible? Are any others planning on remaining home and continuing to study remotely in 2020/2021?

My son is not at Edinburgh but for him remote study is not an option. His university has said that 50% of tuition will be in person in the first term. Large lectures will be online, small groups face to face.

Your nephew may have decided that he will be working from home but unless the university have decided that too then it's not going to work. If I was in your position I'd just let them get on with it, it's a valuable life lesson about checking facts and wishful thinking. They are all adults capable of research and making their own decisions and perhaps they know something you don't and it will all work out well in the end.

Edinburgh are offering fully online options for most courses so those who can't make it don't loose out but are encouraging those who can to come . There will be face to face small group teaching unless they are locked down. Timetable planner is open so your nephew can check exactly is offered for his course options. I suspect even if their is no uni accommodation in January there will be private if he changes his mind. If your nephew has 1st year entry and did maths/FM/computing at A level then he will be fine not coming but not so sure with 2nd year entry. Although Edinburgh is quite experienced with online computing/data science offerings (colleague did a postgrad) so might be fine. I did maths and computing myself a long time ago and would have appreciated the ability to pause and rewind lectures til I got it.

Thank you, everyone.

ClerkMaxwell, what you point out is very helpful and you have really put my mind at rest.

Edinburgh is indeed a four-year programme and DN is indeed doing the full four years. Looking at the programme, he would have had the option to do a Maths degree in three years as he has A* in Maths and FM and would have been allowed advanced entry into second year. However, he doesn't have that option as he chose to do joint degree with CS as well.
