Universal credit and full time student..

Hello,

I'm attending university this September (adult nursing) and currently on universal credit (SAHM, no child maintenance - ex not in the picture, one child so receive the child element and no childcare costs to pay out)..

I will be receiving a maintenance loan and the new 5k bursary for nursing students including approx 2k parent learning allowance.

Will my universal credit stop once I start university or will I still receive it?
Is there a way to work out (if I do receive it) how much will be deducted?

Also do I need to notify universal credit via my journal that I will be starting university instead of just receiving a lump sum when my student loan comes through?

Wanting to be as prepared as possible Grin

Thank you!

Sorry you’ve had no replies. I think most on here are parents of students. Smile My understanding is that the loan and bursary are treated as income but with UC entitlement being calculated monthly I’m not sure how that will affect you with the student loan being paid termly? You may need to have a chat with them, or maybe an independent benefits advisor, like CAB, maybe?

Good luck with your course, how exciting!

Hi ya,

I notified universal credit over the phone. I still received some universal credit but the maintenance loan is counted as income so reduced my UC payments. The additional parent learners allowance isn't counted (so I am told) as income. In Sept I’m hoping to receive a little UC that makes my student loan and studying a viable option through being similar to working and receiving UC without student finance. Only different is i pay back student finance when I earn over £26k.

Good luck

I'm a full time PhD student and single parent and receive Universal Credit on top of my stipend. I also received Universal Credit on top of my postgraduate loan when I was doing my Masters. They have a complicated formula for taking student income into account. They don't count it all as income. On a stipend of £15k a year I'm assumed to have an income of £278 per month. So my payment is reduced by £278.

I found not all UC staff know the rules and they won't tell you in advance how much you will get. I also don't know if the nursing bursary is treated the same. But if it is you will still get something if you show proof of student status and income.
