Estate agent asking for payslips

I expected to be credit checked while acting as a guarantor for my student daughter, however I've also been asked for either my bank statements or my payslips for the last 6 months by the agent.

Is this a thing now?

I am really not happy about providing this via email and I have no idea how securely my information is held or who has access to it.

wow 6 months is a lot.

first question are you definitely just guarantor for only your dd - is she signing a contract with a group of house sharers which includes anything like "jointly and severely liable"?

from the estate agents point of view, they are just making sure they have someone affluent lined up ready to be sued if any of the student tenants fail to pay up. in a house share situation they will do their best to sue the richest guarantor rather than waste money chasing people who couldn't actually afford this. they don't care about identifying which guarantor is actually the parent of the irresponsible tenant, if their contract wording lets them have it easier. could you pay the rent up front to avoid having to be a guarantor?

if you have to do the proof thing then they should accept redacted copies with all the descriptions of your spending blacked out except for the monthly entry showing your salary.

Thanks. They expect me to provide it without seeing the tenancy or guarantors agreement, so setting all sorts of alarm bells off.

I efused to. I pay the rent and my children's father is the guarantor which is a massively better deal for him actually as he doesn't pay a penny! The alternative I offered was I would pay the 12 months rent for my child in advance with no guarantee but they never wanted to take that up.

Wolff they should be able to provide a draft agreement surely? My chidren's father just was vetted as guarantor for next year as was the other flat mate's parent (just 2 of them are sharing) and it was quite intrusive - he had to get two employers to provide a reference within a day and the other person 's parent last week had to get his accountant to sign a statement!

I would ask why they aren't using a credit agency.

How sure are you that this request came from the estate agent?

alexdgr8 · 07/07/2020 17:12

that's a very good point Palaver.

Flittingabout · 07/07/2020 17:17

I would expect this to go to the credit agency not the agent but it is standard to want to check you can afford it surely?

I’ve just went guarantor for my daughter, it went via uk tenants agency or something ( can’t recall Exactly ) and it was the most onerous thing.

I had to provide mortgage statements, utility bill and three months pay slips and they even contacted my manager to confirm my position, my salary and how long I’d worked there, I was quite shocked. Previously I just had to sign.

The issue op is if you don’t provide it, she may well be rejected.
