Continuation of the previous thread for those of us with children who are just finishing their 3rd year at university (so either "graduating" in 2020 or going into year 4 in Autumn 2020)..........

My twins' degree results will be out in late July. Good luck to everyone else waiting for finals results.

Do you know how they found the tutoring jobs in Italy.

DS1 would like a year out after graduation and wants to spend it in Italy ( he’s got dual Italian citizenship so no issues with visas ) He’s going to speak with his job offer to ask about deferring for a year.

Xenia · 24/12/2020 09:29

I see if my son knows how his friend got the job. She really enjoyed it. At first it was a bit strange being in a new country, small apartment (I don't think she was put up in their house) and new people but very quickly she settled in and had a lovely time. Now she is looking for some kind of permanent graduate job which is never easy.

Meanwhile I am still working (as indeed are many people as it is not the bank holiday until tomorrow). So I had better get off here and back to it...

Just in case today runs away with me, Merry Christmas to you all! For those of you working or with loved ones working over Christmas I hope it goes ok and that you manage a break in among the hectic times. 😘

SMaCM · 24/12/2020 13:00

Merry Christmas everyone. DD has a plan to teach us how to make cocktails this evening. She added the ingredients to our shopping list last week.

bigTillyMint · 24/12/2020 13:52

Happy Christmas Xmas Grin

@SMaCM, DD made us Dark n Stormys last night Xmas Wink

Haffdonga · 24/12/2020 14:02

Merry Christmas everyone! May all your Christmases and 2021s be healthy and happy.

And congratulations to all those celebrating the exciting job successes of their dc. DS1 is celebrating being made permanent at his Christmas supermarket shelf-stacking job. Not quite the stellar career we'd hoped for him - but hey, it's paying for his expensive guitar habit! Wink

Cracking open the ginger wine now. Cheers! Wine

Eve DS1 got his Mustique job simply through one of the big, well known tutoring companies. They were keen to sign him up with an Oxford first and very sporty so he had a good pick of things to choose from. Those companies will have a good number of Italian jobs too, not just super glam ones, but it makes sense to stick to the best companies to make as sure as you can that the families in question are reasonably vetted.

goodbyestranger · 24/12/2020 14:42

Speaking of those with family working over Christmas, I sent Boris an e-mail yesterday evening asking him to stop handing out the vaccine to rich ungrateful pussycats in East Devon and to re-direct their share to the doctors like my son and his colleagues spending today and the next three days working on the busiest Covid wards in London who can't seem to access any vaccine at all. Boris still hasn't replied in person but I'm quietly confident that the reply is imminent :)

goodbyestranger · 24/12/2020 14:43

DS2 was the one in Mustique - a not very important typo.

Xenia · 24/12/2020 17:33

Happy Christmas to everyone else too.
I am pleased we now have a 2021 EU/UK deal at long last too so perhaps 2021 will be better than 2020 on lots of fronts.

SMaCM · 24/12/2020 17:48

GoodbyeStranger I hope your DC get the vaccination soon.

Parker231 · 24/12/2020 17:53

Happy Christmas everyone. Here’s hoping for a much better 2021. Our plan was to have left the U.K. before Brexit but obviously Covid got in the way.

We’ve viewed two houses online today so as soon as travel opens up again we can go over and tour some houses. Hopefully we will make our escape during 2021 so only one year late!

goodbyestranger · 24/12/2020 18:16

Thank you SMaCM. I see that I posted three minutes before the trade deal news broke on the BBC, so I expect now that that's out of the way Boris will turn his attention to my email and the mess of the roll out. I'm very pleased to have a deal though so I won't chase him tonight.

ErrolTheDragon · 24/12/2020 20:24

I turned on the radio part way through the news, Evan Davies was interviewing an SNP bloke who sounded so gloomy I thought the deal had fallen through at the last moment.
Hopefully BJ will attend to goodbye's email. I'm not sure whether many other countries are doing better tbh, if they've even started their vaccinations yet.

I had a good chat with DD. They're doing chicken breasts in Parma ham instead of a roast as there's just the two of them there at the moment, but with all the trimmings. DH and I aren't that fond of fowl so are having gammon.

Horsemad · 24/12/2020 20:26

Merry Christmas all!

ErrolTheDragon · 24/12/2020 20:30

Wineyes indeed - and if 'merry' eludes us, then peaceful.

Xenia · 25/12/2020 11:15

Happy Christmas to everyone. I am just taking a short break away from the many cooks in the kitchen...... Daughter 1 and her family will join our family call later from Switzerland (she has been sorting out their repatriation - originally their flights back were tomorrow so I am not sure what is happening with that) as will my older son who is spending Christmas alone due to the tier 4 rules here but he seems perfectly happy with that so that's fine.

DD has sent us a photo of their lunch, it looks nice.

Haffdonga · 25/12/2020 14:57

Merry Christmas everyone! We eat Christmas dinner in the evening so I'm enjoying the short lull before kitchen mayhem resumes. Xmas Smile

Xenia · 25/12/2020 17:20

Our is all eaten, the walk done, watched The Queen and then had the family Zoom call. Daughter in Switzerland said they had a wonderful first day of their week's holiday then had to stay in the chalet for the rest of the week. 10,000 people flew out there from the UK the time they went and she was very very lucky they got themselves back on a whole series of trains yesterday rather than waiting for weeks or days for flights. At least they had a reasonable Christmas in London even though confined to their house as they will be now for quarantine here too. Her children were so sweet and were excited that my other son who again couldn't be with us opened his presents from me to the camera so they could see.

We ended up on our walk from the woods opposite my house in such a muddy footpath churned up by horses it was hard to pull boots out once in the mud which they all found extremely funny watching me but we made it through.

We couldn't be bothered doing a roast today. But we ate what we wanted, had a walk, zoom with DD and the BF.

Malbecfan · 26/12/2020 11:51

Happy Boxing Day all! I'm glad most people made the best of yesterday. We did our usual thing. DD2 & DH love cold turkey so I ordered a large one and M&S didn't disappoint. I thought to check the cooking time on Christmas Eve. DH kindly copied out the instructions for me (then stayed snoring whilst I sorted it out) so I was up at 7 having had a terrible night's sleep with bad indigestion to take the turkey out & prep it. Anyway the DDs turned the music room back into a dining room without being asked, my dad came round at 9 and we drank Bucks Fizz whilst opening our presents. DH lit a roaring fire fuelled by his endless efforts with a chainsaw.

Dad & I went for a walk between turkey bastings and we ate around 1pm. Last year I bought crackers with whistles in them, each had a different note and then there were some printed carols. So between courses we played them. With only 5 of us and 8 notes, some people had 2. The whistles are really out of tune, so as the wine flowed, the giggling got louder and we really enjoyed it (it sounded dire!). After the Queen, we watched our family fave film of The Blues Brothers. Then Dad went back next door and we vegged in front of the TV.

Today the DDs are back to their studies and we will be having a version of Christmas lunch this evening as long as our electricity stays on. Dad & I have had a walk down by the beach already so we're waiting for Storm Bella. DH is bringing more wood into the house so we can at least keep one room warm if necessary. Stay safe all.

latedecember1963 · 26/12/2020 14:41

Me, DH, DS2 and MiL went to DS1's and fiancee's for lunch yesterday. They kept the windows ajar and MiL took her own crockery and cutlery. We only stayed for a couple of hours to allow them to go to see her parents and Nana for a visit after we left.

Although it was brief, it was lovely to be indoors with them, and to see how they have made their new house homely already.
It was the 1st time we hadn't been home all day on Christmas Day since we got married so quite a change for us.
We've agreed that we'll stick to Zoom calls for the next few weeks. We've taken such care to protect MiL we don't want to push our luck.
Boxing Day is my day off from cooking and housework. I've got a jigsaw on the go and I'm sitting in the conservatory watching the birds on the bird feeders.
No sign of Storm Bella in Lancashire yet. Hope she doesn't cause havoc for any of you!

ErrolTheDragon · 26/12/2020 15:43

It started raining earlier than the forecast had indicated so I had to curtail my gardening. But not stormy as such yet. (Also lancashire)

Carriemac · 28/12/2020 09:42

Greeting to all, it’s a very studious house here over Christmas DS1 has his finals in medicine early January and the twins have assignments to finish and graduate jobs to apply for. We are off to an outdoors Christmas lights trail to night for a bit of a chance of scene so hoping for clement weather
