Continuation of the previous thread for those of us with children who are just finishing their 3rd year at university (so either "graduating" in 2020 or going into year 4 in Autumn 2020)..........

My twins' degree results will be out in late July. Good luck to everyone else waiting for finals results.

Well done to your DD @SMaCM!

My DD is studying hard apparently. Managing to get into the library and was yesterday using the Wetherspoons 99p refillable coffee to study with a housemate! They are also interviewing for a new housemate as one with gf has decided to go and live at his mums. Sounds quite exciting as v varied choice of possibles!

Xenia · 21/10/2020 18:38

Horsemad, the twins said the 4 mock law exams were quite hard. One thought one had gone really well until after wards when he discussed it with his twin and realised he had missed some things out. I was more worried about the fact they were going a new on line exam and if the internet would cut out and how different it is from writing one ain exam hall but that side of it was fine for them. They have final exams for those 4 topics in December and next term move on to another different 4 topics. I think they will do okay and these mock exam marks do not really matter. They now have the rest of this week off as a kind of half term.

I spoke to the Bristol one yesterday who said he had a pattern going that he works at the table in the living room and his only flat mate works in her bed room (she has enough space for a desk in hers unlike his smaller bed room) and they tend to cook lunch at the same time and finish later in the day and she is working hard for her masters so it did not sound too bad. He is taking 5 friends (due to rule of 6) out for dinner for his birthday.

I am glad everyone else is doing okay.

Heard from DS last night - he’s coming home for the weekend so need to buy more food and beer. As the term goes on we usually hear less frequently from him. He’s enjoying himself- lots of time in the pub and the gym from the sounds of things. I asked about the modules he needs to complete - he assured me he is doing some studying and emailed over his recent grades - A’s so I can’t complain. His Masters will count towards his Chartered Engineer exams so it’s a double benefit. His future employer in Singapore has contacted him and he’ll start work for them next September.

DD is still enjoying her new job in Brussels. They’ve had an increase in cases so flat hunting isn’t happening but I think she is being spoilt staying with my DSis. No idea when we’re going to be able to see her. My parents live on the Belgian coast and would like to see them as well.

Xenia · 23/10/2020 17:10

That sounds good Parker particularly your son's marks. My son said so far on his law course he is working as hard as he did for A levels which was very hard indeed and more than on his degree (so at least he is trying).

he had a nice birthday dinner out with 6 friends and not the boy they know who lives in a house where someone has come down with CV19 and is now isolating, thankfully. He said a boy in that house had stupidly visited a house with a boy with covid 19 and now was infected and had been in bed with CV19 for 4 days. Thankfully my son and his friends have been keeping away from those people who take that kind of risk.

Glad the exams have been completed Xenia, one less thing to think about!

Not much to report here, DS getting stuck into his course; seems to be enjoying it.

Did you get the extra beer Parker? 🙂 It's milk I have to stock up on when DS 2 is home, don't know how he gets through so much, tbh!

Parker231 · 24/10/2020 07:52

Beer supply has been restocked - DH did a Tesco’s visit last night. DS will be pleased!

Will be lovely to see him and also find out how much work he is actually doing - he can be lazy over getting down to studying.

latedecember1963 · 24/10/2020 10:12

Have a lovely weekend with your DS, Parker.
DS1 hasn't been allowed inside our house or garden since July due to local restrictions which has curtailed his access to our cheese much to his irritation! 😄

Alittlewornout · 25/10/2020 11:09

Ds currently in 4th year at St Andrew's and working hard. He had some good news this week as successfully completed ( the lengthy!!) the process for a graduate position next year with a big 4 company. He is understandably buzzing and its given him even more motivation to keep working hard. Hope you dont mind me sharing on here we are a very small family sadly so not many to share it with. By luck I was visiting both DC so was able to share his celebration with him.

SMaCM · 25/10/2020 12:45

Excellent news Alittlewornout

ErrolTheDragon · 26/10/2020 00:31

That's great, sharing that sort of news is one of the things this sort of thread is for, Alittlewornout.Smile

latedecember1963 · 26/10/2020 07:23

That's great news, Alittlewornout, and means he can focus on getting his best degree result without the distraction and worry of job hunting.

Horsemad · 26/10/2020 07:33

Brilliant news Alittlewornout. Well Done to him! 🙂

bigTillyMint · 26/10/2020 14:07

Well done to @Alittlewornouts DS!

Xenia · 26/10/2020 14:36

Yes, well done. Nothing much to report here. One is having a covid 19 test today. Both are awaiting results of law mocks. One is meeting friends here (always here never at those other boys' houses of course.......) but outside for his birthday with BBQ - apparently that might give off a bit of heat. May be if they cook the food and walk around that will keep them warm. (Tier 2 area so can only meet outside)

I've finally worked out what my username was back in 2016 when this series of threads started! Anyway, this wasn't it but it's close enough - somebody else is now using my old one.

Xenia good luck with the law mocks and the covid test. It's interesting how so many of your children seem to have gone into law when so many want to do something different to their parents (or is that just me?) DD has followed a similar path to me though entirely off her own bat.

Alittlewornout great news, well done!

Parker Singapore sounds like an exciting opportunity.

Errol I wouldn't be able to help their either.

SMaCM good news about the job, it all helps.

DD has been working since May as she's getting experience to help with her application for the doctorate. She's got two interviews coming up, one with a very specific charitable organisation which will really help with her application and one in the NHS (ditto) and has also picked up some agency work so with a bit of luck she'll be able to leave where she is now as I think she's got all that she's going to get out of it. Her application has gone in for next year's course so it's finger crossed for jobs and university.

Xenia · 26/10/2020 16:28

Yes, I suppose it's natural. My father and my sibling - psychiatrists. My daughters (and probably 2 of my sons) lawyer as I am. My children's father - organist as was his grand father. I suppose a baker's son became a baker, a farmer's son a farmer and in our family coal miner after coal miner. Perhaps it is just easier to do what your family does. I certainly have no agenda to breed lawyers or anything else. They can all do as they want.

Good luck to the en0lagay daughter in the interviews. i think one of my sons may be applying for a job tomorrow and might want me to look over the application he says. I have pinned him down to an exact time so we can make it happen.

@Alittlewornout - congratulations! I did my graduate training with a Big4 and once I qualified I moved onto another firm, smaller but with the opportunities I wanted.

DT’s both got offered their graduate jobs whilst still at Uni so took the pressure off them although I have reminded DS that if he’s going to get his Masters and the grades to give exemptions from his Chartered Engineer qualifications, he does need to do some work. He is not the most diligent student!
I don’t think he’s liked studying from age five when he realised he would need to learn to read and write English as well as our two family languages.

Alittlewornout · 26/10/2020 17:17

Thanks for all the good wishes, I just wanted to give hope to other students that there are still opportunities out there even in these very uncertain times. Good luck to all the students sitting exams and applying to further study. They all deserve to do well after this awful year.

Had a lovely weekend with DS at home. Am on the countdown now until he’s back for Christmas. Now just got to work out Christmas with DD being in Brussels . Normally everyone comes to us - DH’s parents from Canada, his DSis and her family from the US and my parents, DSis and her family from different parts of Belgium.

That sounds extremely complex! Most of my family are in Australia, there's only three of us here.
Parker231 · 27/10/2020 19:21

We’re down to three now DD is in Brussels. DH and I were due to move to Canada this year but obviously it’s been held up by Covid. Once DS has finished his Masters and started his job in Singapore, there won’t be any of the family in the U.K. although we will visit regularly as we are keeping our London house and we own a U.K. based company.

latedecember1963 · 28/10/2020 07:12

I think Christmas planning is going to be very tricky, almost to the last few days.
We are in Tier 3, and have been under tight restrictions since July. We celebrate on Christmas Eve, starting with a concert at the Bridgewater Hall in the afternoon followed by dinner at our house. Usually there are 7 of us. We know the concert isn't happening but we need to work out what we can do to have an enjoyable but safe time with my 82 year old mum and 88 year old MiL.
Has your son had his C19 result back, Xenia? I hope he's ok.

Xenia · 28/10/2020 11:00

He was negative but his only flatmate is positive. So he is sure he will start to have symptoms soon as he and she share the flat and cook together. I think if he gets it he might have another test in 5 days' time. May be he won't catch it or he will not have symptoms but he probably will. As his course is all on line he is just working very hard in the flat and they do have a roof terrace so at least can get outside (when it's not pouring with rain if they feel up to that).

It is hard to know what rules will be in place and where on Christmas Day.

People should remember you can meet any number of people for business and work meetings and lunches and separately that grandparents and other informal carers are allowed to look after children and that will apply as much on Christmas Day as any other day, provided you fall within the requirements of those sections/exceptions.

OP posts:
Xenia · 28/10/2020 11:01

The above relates to London, England. it is getting very complicated. Goodness knows what you can do in Wales and also if you go from say London to Bristol - higher risk to lower - you take your tier 2 London restrictions with you.

en0lagay · 28/10/2020 12:49

DD got her place on her postgraduate course Smile

Who knows what is going to happen over Christmas. We were going to have lunch out but I don't know if that will be allowed or not.

Xenia there is some guidance somewhere about changing tiers, other than not travelling out of tier 3 to tier 1/2 I can't remember what it said and I can't find it now. It was on one of the government websites though, presumably gov.uk
