Just that really. Mine has not yet gone down with the virus, although colleagues have and one friend is currently self-isolating as a flatmate has it.

Both of my DC came home from uni with a bag and laptop each. All of their stuff is still at uni. Unfortunately much of the coursework and notes are there too which is making work/revision difficult. Interesting times

DD is a 2nd year at Cardiff and has been home now for 5 weeks. She has had some work to do over the holidays and is revising for exams which will now "not count", but she is trying to act as if they will. From tomorrow online lectures and case groups for CBL will start. She is also on a big list for volunteering, but as it's through the medical school she would need to go back to Cardiff for it. There is a possibility of them being asked to give PPE training which I find quite amusing given the lack of PPE!

Sorry for not coming back before, mumsnet has become a home for tory bots lately and not a place I want to be around.

There is going to be a brief respite now - but with more people returning to work a second wave of the virus soon. How bad the second wave, and subsequent waves, will be depends on how much physical distancing people are prepared to tolerate. I dont see life returning to pre virus until a vaccine or better treatments are developed.

However more is being learnt about the virus all the time, treatments are improving and there is massive incententive to get a vaccine.

My child is just pleased their pay looked right this month despite more than one change in their rota. They have stopped mentioning PPE, we have donated to those making scrubs and masks for the NHS.

Has anyone’s DC had an online graduation this year? Not sure what to expect, or if I should be doing anything to prepare? DS is scheduled to get his finals results 2 hours (!!) before the graduation ceremony starts!

Not mine but there was an article in the local paper about a Notttingham Uni medic student who had her graduation ceremony online via Zoom. Her family were able to watch it so I’m assuming they did the awards in batches? She was dressed in a gown etc in the photos, perhaps hired them locally?

The Nottingham one was so cute. They were all on the One Show via zoom with home made mortarboards and gowns. And loads of lovely messages from Dean and tutors. Mine only a 2nd year. The 5th years are already in hospital last working.

Pleased to report that DS passed! 🎉He got his results, graduated and was registered with the GMC within 24 hours! The graduation ceremony took half an hour, they took their oath together, but their names weren’t called out individually, so glad that they will have a more personal one, eventually. We thoroughly enjoyed our small family celebration.
Best of luck to all DCs on this journey, and thanks so much for all the support and help I’ve had here, it’s been very much appreciated SmileFlowers

Congratulations to your son @Mindgone !
It seems hardly any time since they were applying. I hope he gets to have a proper ceremony at some stage.

@Carriemac I really hope the PPE issue is sorted by then. Dd is due to do her placement in the ER...

Report
alreadytaken · 12/05/2020 09:48

congratulations to your son mindgone. Hospitals are trying to have clean and virus areas - even for ER. The PPE situation is quite variable but even if young people get the virus they are very unlikely to die from it. Encourage them to get as much sun as possible though as the evidence for vitamin D levels influencing the severity of illness is growing daily.

@alreadytaken I am certainly trying that tactic. As much sun a I can get - when it's warm I have my computer outside and teach lessons in the garden. I'm going to go back to school looking like I've been in Barbados.

Thanks so much everyone! Flowers It does feel a bit surreal, and a bit anti-climaxy at the moment, but that’s just life these days! He’ll be hearing details next week about starting work early, if still needed.

Dd has just heard she will be doing her finals next January- presumably brought forward due to COVID situation. That is very soon! I think she has mixed feelings about it

Report
Needmoresleep · 31/07/2020 22:29

Wow.

Are they sure they can give them all the training needed next term, plus any catch from last?

Report
Decorhate · 01/08/2020 07:50

I think they are going to do some more placements after the exams. I’m guessing they just want to be able to qualify them in case of another wave of Covid. If they pass the written exams they won’t have to do OSCEs (which the unis would prefer, to minimise contacts)

Report
Decorhate · 01/08/2020 07:51

Oh and Dd is already back at uni, catching up on the placements cancelled last term.

Report
alreadytaken · 05/08/2020 08:29

OCSEs seem to be a problem for some, I know one friend of my child would have been delighted not to take them. He did pass though.

Mine is pleased that rotations are going ahead as planned, with induction partly online.

A relative (non medic) had to graduate online and I suggested to his parents that they hire a gown anyway so he has a graduation photo. I would have been quite pleased to miss the expensive graduation ceremonies with all the photographs and expensive frames.

Not sure if there is anyone still around from the 2015 intake? @Carriemac ? How did your dc fare today? Dd was chuffed to get her first choice for F1 area so will be much closer to home from August which I am looking forward to! Can’t believe they are almost at the end of their uni days (though it’s been mainly placements in recent years)

Report
sluj · 11/03/2021 21:19

DS got his first choice today too in the West Midlands. Now to look at the programmes on offer.
I am beginning to wonder how on earth accommodation works though if you are moving every 4 months? Still got to get through finals and a last paediatrics placement afterwards before graduation though. Hope everyone else's DC got what they wanted.

Decorhate · 11/03/2021 21:33

Well done to your ds @sluj dd had her finals in January. Didn’t realise not all unis had brought them forward. On her last proper placement now but there may be an extra one after Easter.
