Apply for just a foundation year?

So, DS hadn't planned on going to uni and wanted to get an apprenticeship, but now is having a wobble about his options come September and is reconsidering. Ideally he'd like to do engineering but doesn't have maths a level so would need to do a foundation year. Apologies if this is a daft question, none of our families went to uni, and we didn't previously look into it for DS. Is it possible to apply to just do a foundation year, and at the end of it, do you have a qualification in its own right? Or do you have to apply for the whole degree with foundation year?

He should apply for a degree with foundation year. If he finishes the foundation year although he'd be expected to progress to year 1 of the degree, he could move to year 1 of a different institution.

What would be the aim of just wanting to do the FY? It isn't a qualification in its own right.

That's what I wasn't sure of. I thought they used to call it a foundation degree. He just wants a bit of breathing space to, and we thought a year getting an additional qualification might be a good way of doing that, but if it's not a qualification then it's back to the drawing board. Ultimately, he'd prefer to be working, hence why he wanted to go the apprenticeship route, so I'm not sure a full degree is ideal for him. Perhaps another year at college might be better, but not sure what else he could do in a year that would be beneficial and not for the sake of it.

A foundation degree is something different! (I know, I didn't make the titles up ). A Foundation Degree is a two year programme, equivalent to the first two years of a degree, and usually the student has the option to take one more year and top up to a full degree. A foundation degree is a qualification in its own right though.
