Edinburgh admissions enquiry now??

Given today's news about A levels I need some advice. DS is still waiting for an offer from Edinburgh. Is it worth calling admissions tomorrow to see what is happening? I'm worried he'll get a rejection now and it's his favourite!

Uni staff will probably have more urgent priorities right now, I'm afraid - email might be more considerate than phoning.

Emailed and just got an auto reply so rang to get prerecorded message saying office is shut!

Many universities are not allowing staff to come to work unless it is essential for them to be there. I expect the admissions team will be working from home and are probably just struggling to keep up with e-mails. I'm sure you'll get a reply in time. There's no point phoning.

just got rejected from Edinburgh. He’s beyond gutted and has gone to bed in a dark room. I feel soooo bad for him. The only feedback was that competition for deferred entry was very high. I can’t help feeling yesterday’s announcement screwed him over..... even reapplying may not work because we don’t know what’s happening with grades..... 😡😡😡😡

OP that's very disappointing but why do you think CV affected his chance of an offer?

LIZS · 19/03/2020 20:30

Sad Deferred entry is always tricky at Edinburgh. They won't commit to more than a nominal number as it affects balance of funding, even more so atm with risk of overseas applications falling. He could reapply in the autumn, if he still wants to go there. What was his subject?

Localher0 · 20/03/2020 08:44

Thanks @LIZS for that info. I feel bad that we encouraged him to go for deferred entry now. I hadn't done enough research to realise it might adversely affect him. He has got 3 other offers of which he has now confirmed 2. And the benefit of his gap year is that he does have time to reapply to Edinburgh with his gap year experience. I guess I'm just worried that this year's grades will be treated differently- although they shouldn't be.

I'm not looking for a conspiracy related to the announcement I am just wondering out loud whether those applications that were still pending just had to be rejected because, like airlines, unis over-offer. But I'll never know and promise it won't make me bitter 😬

As LIZS says deferred entry for competitive courses is often more difficult. The person at the Cambridge open day we attended explained that they had to be certain that a deferred entry applicant was going to be better than the cut off the following year.

As for CV, Universities may have a problem. Those demanding high grades presumably count on a few not making their offers. This presumably won't happen this summer, if grades are allocated on mocks/predictions/whatever. Plus uncertainty about a second wave of virus come autumn, no vaccine for 18 months, what is happening to this years students, and they may be erring on the side of caution.

Being kept waiting so long suggests your DS was very close to the cut off. If he is taking a gap year, and if he can face it, there seems no reason why he should not reapply. No guarantees, but he should have a reasonable chance.

Localher0 · 20/03/2020 09:40

Thanks Needmoresleep - that also makes a lot of sense. I was just surprised as I expected Edinburgh's offer to be lower by maybe one grade than Exeter (Astar AA) Bristol (AAA) or at least the same. DS is predicted Astar AA so am just a bit puzzled. But hey ho - it's done now and I've got to get over it. DS seems a lot more chill than me 😬

It's very stressful with everything else that's happening...

Hoghgyni · 21/03/2020 11:43

He is not the only one. DD has an offer for Oxford, but Edinburgh rejected her on her 18th birthday!

LIZS · 21/03/2020 13:02

That's hard. Dd got confirmation of last remark on her 18th last year, which meant her Oxbridge dream died. She had asked Edinburgh (insurance) to defer which they refused eventually so took a gap year She got an unconditional offer this year and will hopefully go in September.
