Are your DCs returning to their uni town after Easter?

Both of my DC’s unis have said that there will be no more face to face teaching and exams will either be online or cancelled.

Both unis state that libraries will remain open.

One DC has a break clause in their accommodation so can give two months’ notice to leave and the other is in uni accommodation.

I am not at all clear whether this means they should stay at home (and presumably save money as not paying for living in uni town) or return and live in uni town sitting in their rooms accessing stuff remotely.

What are others doing?

Think dd2 will go back at some point but if all the pubs and sites are closed there probably isn't much point.

Ds is basically finished his year at Easter...only had to return for overseas field trip which has now been cancelled , so waiting to hear what his plans are (he's 350 miles away)
He has some assignments to finish ( online teaching) and waiting to hear what's happening regarding the replacement assessment for the fieldwork module which accounted for 1/4 of the year! Fortunately no end of year exams and he's been getting 1sts/ 2:1 in essays so far
Has flat for final year sorted but won't be moving in till summer, so will probably put his belongings in storage till then

Liverpool uni not charging for last term of accommodation but that doesn't help dd as shes in private!

ifonly4 · 18/03/2020 11:20

DD's lectures are online and exams cancelled. Many have gone home already (a large percentage live abroad). She's 650 miles from home and said a couple of weeks ago she wanted to be at home if it kicked off. Her stuff went into store yesterday. Travelling back on Thursday and not returning until September.

DS will be returning only to pack up his room. His standard of living here is better than at uni (washing machine, well stocked freezer, faster internet) and there is nothing that he can do there that he can't do here given the nature of his course (not library intensive). My niece is at a different uni on a different course and she's staying put.

OP, sorry meant to say, gentlly spell it out worse case scenario (that some areas might have to go into isolation, so they won't be able to come home, have little company and nowhere to go). Let them decide where they want to be.

Tonyaster · 18/03/2020 11:24

Dd is absolutely gutted. She thinks she is going back next term, and there's been no advice saying uni will be closed, but exams have been cancelled. I feel so bad for her. She did a year of retakes, was unsure about the uni, ended up loving it and becoming a college rep, not to mention getting her first proper boyfriend. Now shes back home, in the box room, confined to the house.

googlepoodle · 18/03/2020 11:32

I’m watching this too - my guess is that all unis will act the same and not charge for accommodation post Easter and all students will be home except for those who cannot. But we need an announcement soon as many are preparing to come home and need to know whether to bring all their things.

Applepieco · 18/03/2020 11:37

Has anybody any idea how the rent due for the Summer term works, in private accommodation, if the Uni closes?

Tonyaster · 18/03/2020 11:41

I'm picking dd up tonight and telling her to bring everything home

Applepieco · 18/03/2020 11:44

We signed a contract for the whole academic year for DD’s uni house, payable at the beginning out each term. I’m assuming we are still liable for the payment for the Summer term?

ListeningQuietly · 18/03/2020 16:53

Private rental houses will still charge regardless

fees will be charged even though no contact time given

ShanghaiDiva · 18/03/2020 23:12

Ds is at Warwick and not going back as no face to face contact and all exams will be done online.
We will still be paying for his accommodation- year 2 so not in halls.

BackforGood · 18/03/2020 23:18

dd hasn't come home. I think she'd rather be confined to a house with her mates than her parents and siblings Grin

Mustbetimeforachange · 18/03/2020 23:22

DS1 staying put for now as has to finish some stuff off that can't be done from here (final year).I wish he would come home though. DS2 coming home tomorrow & I've told him to bring everything. What strange times we live in.

InfiniteCurve · 18/03/2020 23:24

My DC's uni have advised students to go home, not just for the Easter break. They are currently reviewing what will happen re accommodation and fees.

Tonyaster · 18/03/2020 23:26

If you live in London I would strongly advise bringing your dcs home

Fev11 · 18/03/2020 23:35

Events have moved quickly since my first post. I’ve brought one DC back today, all uni buildings will close from Friday and there will be no more face to face teaching or exams in uni town next term, but there haven’t been any announcements about accommodation costs or if libraries etc might be open after Easter. She is devastated as had settled in so well.
I also have a DC at uni in London - she wants to stay until Friday but I’m worried that a lockdown might stop her getting back home- not sure if that’s likely. Surely they will let students out to go home?

Making my dd return from Liverpool on Friday. Think the lock downs will start very soon now that school s are closed.
