Should he chase this up?

My DS didn't get the grades for his first choice of Uni last summer so accepted a place at his insurance choice, Uni B, but then deferred until 2020.

His heart obviously wasn't in it as He then decided he would rather go to Uni C. We went to look around and just happened to bump into the admissions decision maker for his course who said that although DS didn't quite meet the standard grade requirement he would offer him a place. He said he would need to withdraw from Uni B and submit a new application for Uni C via UCAS and told DS to email him once the application was submitted so he could approve it.

DS application was submitted the week before Christmas but hasn't heard anything yet. I realise they are busy but am panicking slightly.

Should DS chase up yet or wait a bit longer?

I'd check on the University web-site to see when the new term begins and then chase it.

Some staff are only back this week after the Christmas break and the application has to go through an administrative system before it gets to the admission tutor.

It won't do any harm to chase it. It will remind them that your son is keen and might be a useful prompt. Smile

Thanks @lionheart

He added two additional choices on Monday night "just in case" (they had offered him places last year after he got his grades so were pretty much a dead cert) and had an offer from one of them today so that was really quick.

I'd like to think that the admissions guy at Uni C wouldn't let DS give up his place then go back on his word so hopefully he will hear from them soon.

I will encourage him to chase early next week. I am rubbish at waiting!

It's a long hard process. But don't worry about chasing, especially if it is not a straightforward entry--admissions tutors are used to it (I know because I used to have this role.) Smile

Put uni b down as well then. I'm not quite sure how uni c could offer him a place verbally like that when they hadn't had all the ucas forms in. What he probably meant was if your son did wish to go anywhere other than uni b he'd need to reapply this year.

SirB0bby · 17/01/2020 17:56

@RedHelenB Uni C definitely said they would offer him a place. When i said do you think he'll get a place if he applies as we don't want DS to give up his place at uni B if it's unlikely, he said I know he will get a place as its my decision. Asked DS to email him when the application is submitted so he could extract his application and approve it. DS has also put uni B and another Uni at the last minute just in case and has had an offer.

It can happen that way SirBObby and it really can't hurt to chase it/send a prompt.

SirB0bby · 17/01/2020 19:04

@RedHelenB Uni's don't wait until they have had all the applications in before making offers. If thru did, no one would get an offer before 16th Jan, after the closing date.

I know that. However some unis wait until they have a batch and then send offers out

It's worth chasing up - I know when I was doing my application I had an interview slot tentatively arranged by phone, but the confirmation email never came through, so eventually I emailed in to check and the person had got halfway through sending it and something had distracted them in the office and they'd never actually sent it! Things like that do happen as people are human and it was just incredibly straightforward to resolve.

I know my department are in peak interview season as well so things are pretty frantic in the admissions side of thing and stuff gets put to one side and slips down lists so it's always worth chasing up.

He chased and was told his application was approved by the school a few weeks ago but for some reason it hasn't fed through to UCAS so it's being looked into.

Good news and good for him. Smile

SirB0bby · 24/01/2020 22:53

Thank you, he has had his offer and accepted it so chasing was the right thing to do. Thanks for your advise.
