What do you wear to a college dinner at Oxford

DD’s boyfriend is at Oxford and she’s visiting in a couple of weeks. He’s going to take her to some sort of formal college dinner and has told her to “bring a nice dress”.

How formal are we talking? She has clubbing dresses and a ball gown and nothing in between.

That dress looks perfect. I think guests can borrow gowns? When DS invited his sister to a formal she somehow wound up wearing a gown (over a very short dress). It certainly wasn't hers! She also got completely smashed and had a whale of a time. Classy, my family!

Yep, Sunday Formals. She will need a smart dress, not necessarily "cocktail" just something nice. Let them know in advance of dietary issues, as they tend to do things like roast game, which will obviously be an issue!

I have a cousin at magdelen, she has a knee length long sleeved velvet dress in a simple design that gets worn for every formal, so basically a cocktail dress type thing is fine. A nice jumper and trousers (not jeans) or a skirt would probably do too. Of course she won't need a gown as a guest, although I think Cambridge / Durham guests like to wear theirs! Vegetarian food is apparently okay, it's just a case of him putting it on the booking.
