DC has just told me that the Erasmus exchange scheme has been scrapped by the UK government. I am gutted for all those students who will lose out.

Not actually true afaik.

Kyvia · 09/01/2020 18:18

That’s not true through. The government voted against being forced to negotiate in a particular way on Erasmus, not against Erasmus itself. There is no indication yet that any students will lose out or that student exchanges will not continue, either as part of Erasmus or otherwise.

So you can reassure your child that they’ve misunderstood, it’s politics, and the status of the U.K. in Erasmus is not settled yet.

PatsySmyth · 09/01/2020 21:18

Perhaps this can be a learning ecxperience for DC's internet eeducation. If they must have access to social media and tend to use it for news rather thean relaible sources its best to direct them toward fact checking services, equally when they come to you you can also fact check for them rather than coming to another social media source for confirrmation of news stories. The first reply to your post demonstrates what sadly happens when we go to social media for news. People do not bother to check before confirming things.

Heres Channel 4's.

It's very true that it is not a done deal yet. But what is also true is that many European universities are already moving their schemes to Irish universities in response.

Xenia · 10/01/2020 19:28

So the child misread even the first sentence of that link - the word"may" Wow. Sounds like a good lesson for the child - get them to write an essay about how wrong they were to read that and construe the scheme was scrapped!

titchy · 10/01/2020 19:29

Yes I'm sure the Government will prioritise negotiating Erasmus membership amongst all the other separate deals they have to decide by the end of the year. Hmm

Clavinova · 10/01/2020 21:01

So the child misread even the first sentence of that link

Green Party MEP Molly Scott Cato can't read either, tweeting:

"The Tory government has voted against continued involvement in the Erasmus scheme that allowed young people to spend time in other EU countries."

Fifthtimelucky · 11/01/2020 11:27

I suspect that Molly Scott Cato knows exactly what the position really is. She is deliberately misleading the public.

Politicians on all sides are prone to this sort of thing and I think the new fact-checking websites are a really good idea.

Erasmus covers lots of countries who have never been in the EU (eg Iceland and Turkey) and I think it is extremely unlikely that we will pull out of it.

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 11/01/2020 11:29

Erasmus has not been scrapped

Tartyflette · 11/01/2020 11:31

......yet.

AlexaShutUp · 11/01/2020 11:34

Erasmus hasn't been scrapped but its future has certainly been put in jeopardy. Like so many things.

I'm resigned now to the shit show that is Brexit, but it is just so sad. Sad

GrouchoMrx · 11/01/2020 13:16

It's as good as certain at this stage that Erasmus will be scrapped and nearly all universities are proceeding on this basis.

What do you mean “moving their schemes”? Irish universities have always participated in Erasmus.

BlaueLagune · 11/01/2020 18:11

many European universities are already moving their schemes to Irish universities in response

British universities have spent the last three years making sure that their partnerships with European universities are sound. And continental European unis have partnerships with the UK and Ireland, it's not an either/or.

You don't need Erasmus to study overseas, though it is clearly very nice to get the money.

I really hope the British government sees the value of the scheme, but according to the article in the Times today, they think its a middle class perk. (Apparently, their new voters in the north don't go to university).

Piggywaspushed · 11/01/2020 18:13

OK, widening their schemes in Irish universities in response...

NoMorePoliticsPlease · 11/01/2020 19:43

I do sometimes wonder how we all get different things out of the same news, todays (Sun) leading article in The Times ," there is no reason Brexit should lead to quitting the Erasmus programme There are. 37 countries participate including Norway Serbia Turkey and Iceland that are not in the EU. It is still under discussion as is a replacement exchange programme. As this post has demonstrated, paople hear a snatch of a story with a soundbite and off we jolly well go. All that was discussed so far was clause that mandated the UK to negotiate full membership with the EU. There are a lot of issues to discuss, thus is only one

titchy · 11/01/2020 19:57

Because joining as a non-EU member will mean negotiation. According to the prime minister all negotiations will be complete by the end of 2020. How much do you think the negotiators will prioritise Erasmus over all the negotiations, 10 years worth possibly?

Exactly.
