But my son aged 3 years is unoffically according to HV on the autistic spectrum( still waiting to see the paeditrician).Do you think I should Start the degree or not. Also if I did start the degree how felixble are universtys for time off for appointments.I would really hate to pass up this oppotunity if its totally unnesscary. Hubby can do some of the childcare and Grandma is ready to help as well . I have 3 older children as well.Opions please

dukester, well done you - i think you should go for it.

Based on what does your HV say your little boy is autistic? is she qualified to make that diagnosis? i thought it would be down to a peadiatritian, but im not sure.

I did a biochemistry degree as a mature student and whilst it was tough with DD1 (i had a very supportive family who looked after her all the time for me) and be prepared for being up working til two in the morning etc, it was the best thing i ever did. I loved it and hated it in equal measure at the time, but i was interested enough to drive me on.

What i am trying to say is this, if you really want to do it, then you will fit in around your son. Of course he will come first and if your uni is anything like mine they will be really understanding. They will happily extend deadlines etc if you are finding it hard, they get enough requests from that from students who havent done a certain peice of work becaue they have been on the piss all weekend But they will make allowances for your situation. You will be allocated a personal tutor who will be a good person to make a friend of as they will back you up if you need more time etc. Generally speaking, lectures aren't compulsory so as long as you catch up (often downloadable now anyway) later you'll be fine. To be honest, most of your effective study will be self directed too, becaus the lectures just give the bare bones. You will probably have practicals to do, which are compulsary but you should know their dates in advance, and again, if you have family commitments as long as you keep the uni informed they will accomodate.

Only you know if you are up for the work load, but give it a go, you may well surprise yourself.

Thanks for your reply, He shows various autistic traits and his senco is of the same opiion as his health vistor.( i know they can't diagnose but the senco is ace and i have a sister with sld ) He has already been placed on the action plus register for september so the nusery can get funding for an extra memebr of staff for him.

My two sisters say I should give it miss he needs me blah blah but when I am around he just becomes more dependant on me and withdrawen from everybody else.

Do you think I should ring the uni and have a chat with them.

Maybe do the course next year. Is that possible?

I would phone and speak to admissions and explain your situation. Some Uni's really don't like students having time off, although I am sure they would be understanding of your situation.

It would be better to tell them your situation and let them advise you.
Wow, you must be bright to do a Biology degree. I struggled with GCSE Biology .

Okay going to ring the mature students advisor first thing monday. Will let you all know what they say.I am also going to try and get DS in for a cancellation with the paeditrican before I make any firm decisions.

BarbieGirl I am not bright far from it tbh just find it really intreasting and had some fab science tutors who convinced me I could do this.

Thanks for your advice I really apreicate it and by the way what courses are you guys doing
