Lancaster Collegiate system

has anyones children studied/is studying at Lancaster University? DD is set on going here as she attended summer school for a week and was v impressed as were me and dh.

She is geeky and totally unmaterialistic and a bit of a scruff , not sporty and isn't in to clubbing or drinking really- has Asbergers. Just wondering which college she would fit in best

The colleges aren't arranged around personalities or types in any way so I don't think it matters at all. Has she been and looked around the campus. The only real factor for me would be whether the college she picks has big corridors of people or is arranged in small blocks with fewer people sharing the facilities.
I was in Lonsdale and we had very long corridors which was great for socialising but the college has now moved to a new site at the bottom of campus.

Agree it’s worth visiting to see all the different styles of accommodation. They have traditional blocks of student halls comprising of flats made up of bedrooms with a communal kitchen, town houses, smaller flats etc. The colleges have an “ethos” they purport to have but really they are very similar. For example I was in Fylde which was the “sports” college but all the other colleges competed in sport as well

Also a lot of people picked their college based on their departments so they had as short a commute as possible

I picked my college based on accommodation costs and facilities! The vast majority of the friends I made were not in the same college as me - I met them through a club. For me personally the college was just where I cooked and slept. I wouldn't get too hung up about it.

I don't think we even picked in my day (although it was a very long time ago)

Lancaster is my DS's favourite choice too, he loved the self contained campus and the feel of the place.

DS liked Pendle College due to its proximity to the Computer Science building. The only ones wasn't keen on were Fylde due to it's sporty feel and and County due to its size. The university did however say that each college doesn't have a distinct personality.

It's a fab university. They'll have a great time whichever college they're in. It really doesn't matter which they pick.

Thank you everyone; interesting to see they aren't too different from each other which is not how it was slanted to us. No doubt dd will want the one nearest to psychology as she can be a lazy moo at times but I will really miss her and am dreading it really

If you pick the college closest to your department you are more likely to have others in your block/corridor doing the same subject. Which can make it easier to find friends I guess. But because of the college system people tend to have lots of friends in their college and making friends it as isn't subject/course based as it might be with a non campus university.

They knocked my college down, sadly - the old prison-style Grizedale rooms were very character building imo

When I was there the colleges were mostly halls of residence - it didn’t make much difference really. Although it did means that you could do a campus bar crawl, which was great. Oh for the liver capacity of youth...!

My DS is in Furness . He has Aspergers .

He absolutely loves it. I can’t recommend their student services enough.

All the best looking boys were in Furness in my day (long long ago)

The psychology department at Lancaster University has come under fire this week for accepting so many students that they can't all fit into the lecture theatres. Students are being told to watch lectures on their laptops.

DD1did psychology at Lancaster, loved it and has found it highly regarded as a degree. She was in County and loved it, even though it is big you still make friends easily there but she also had friends in other colleges who all had a great time too

Yeah, it's a pity they moved most of the Colleges down to the south campus. I used to be in County and I loved the quiet of the top of the north spine. I also liked being able to roll out of my room and into the library or my department.
