Degree apprenticeships

Flippinfab40 · 25/10/2019 09:16

My daughter is having difficulty finding a list of degree apprenticeships available. She is finding some on employer's websites, some on university websites and coming across some of these by searching on Twitter.
The government website for apprenticeships doesn't have all the ones on which she has found. She is worried she is missing opportunities because there doesn't seem to be a single place to look and the ones she has found are opening for applications now.
Any ideas?
Thanks for any help

My daughter is in the same position, constant trawling the Internet. She is looking for Sep 2020 so not all are open yet. Some she has signed up for alerts when they open for applications.
I thought there would be a lot more this year.

Flippinfab40 · 25/10/2019 11:12

Is your daughter signing up for alerts from employers or universities Jazzmin? If it's employers, are they listed on their recruitment pages? We're only finding ones which are already open.

UCAS has a section on degree apprenticeships and links to different vacancies.

Jazzmin · 25/10/2019 15:23

Flippinfab, She is signing up directly. Some she met at ‘What Career live’ a couple of weeks ago. It is complicated, sometimes I find one and tell her about it and she can’t see it on their website. It is real trial and error. What sort of apprenticeship is she looking for?
I’m a bit worried about where she will live, as there are not many near us.

Flippinfab40 · 25/10/2019 15:45

Thanks. She's working through that too but it's not easiest to filter and she is also finding apprenticeships elsewhere which are not listed on UCAS.

Jazzmin, she's looking for IT and is prepared to move out for the right opportunity.
It sounds like you're having similar issues which is reassuring in a way! What is your daughter looking for? They seem to be amazing opportunities but it's a whole new world to me!

Probably somewhere you have seen, but there is a website called 'not going to uni' that lists these I think.

titchy · 25/10/2019 16:38

Lots in IT! If she's looking to start next September it might be a little early to see them advertised now, although I agree there's a lack of a central place to look. She's looking in the right places though.

An alternative might be to look at the universities offering Digital Solutions degree apprenticeships - they've often got an 'about us' page or two which lists the employers they're working with, then contact those employers to see where and when they'll advertise their 2020 vacancies.

BubblesBuddy · 25/10/2019 18:10

I am surprised they don’t list them at the same time as uni applications get going. If DC are making choices, how long are they supposed to hold back from uni applications? There clearly should be a central register! I guess that’s just too organised though!

Flippinfab40 · 25/10/2019 18:13

Thank you Eva and titchy. I haven't heard of not going to uni so will have a look. And yes, digital solutions seems to be what lots are called so that's another way to go about it. Some have opened already for next September and some already have less than a week before they close which is why we want to find them as soon as possible! Good to hear that there may well be others later on as well.
Thanks for all advice and tips!

There are excellent software engineering apprenticeships with some of the Investment Banks - JP Morgan, Morgan Stanley are two. These two banks offer them in Glasgow with the degree at Strathclyde. I believe that they also offer programs in England but I’m not as familiar with those offerings. PwC have a data science apprenticeship with the degree at St Andrews or Edinburgh.

celtiethree · 26/10/2019 20:35

It’s def not too early to look. The big companies will interview and close in the spring if not earlier for September intake. My DC is in the second year of a degree apprenticeship and they applied alongside UCAS, keeping uni offers open until all steps of the application were complete including all on boarding checks etc.

@Flippinfab40 - My friends DD managed to secure a very good degree apprenticeship (IT) with Jaguar Landrover/Warwick Uni. It is early at the moment but I suggest your DD registers on their site. PS- it was picked up from Indeed.com

MarchingFrogs · 27/10/2019 07:33

Presumably they have already looked at Ford and GCHQ?

titchy · 27/10/2019 08:59

Just to note if she lives in England she's only eligible for English apprenticeships...

But those same companies offer Digital apprenticeships in England too - London based.

Jazzmin · 20/07/2020 18:58

Sorry for the post on an old thread, but thought I’d update as my daughter found out this week she got a place on a degree apprenticeship. We are thrilled, though it is a mixed bag of emotion as she spent all of lockdown trying to convince herself that uni would be great after all! Interestingly, this one is the first she got as far as the assessment day. It was all online so a bit strange. Thought I’d mention it in case anyone searches for advice in the future- there is little about them online still!

Serin · 20/07/2020 22:34

Congratulations to your DD Jazzmin.
I have a DS in exactly the same situation.
Due to be starting at Durham in Sept but has just been offerred a degree apprenticeship.
He is going to take the apprenticeship, but I'm slightly sad he will miss out on Durham.

Jazzmin · 21/07/2020 07:52

Congrats to your DS too, Serin. Is he relocating? My DD is initially working from home, so worried she won’t get to meet any nice apprentices to arrange a house share with. She can commute if needed, but I’m so desperate for her to have the fun of independent living and living in a major student town. I’m worrying far too much!

titchy · 21/07/2020 10:02

Fab news!

Bearnecessity · 25/07/2020 19:49

I have just found out my ds has been offered a degree apprenticeship in architecture..anyone know anything about these?

titchy · 25/07/2020 20:05

Does he have a degree already? The arch apprenticeship is a post graduate one. In which case great! If not, then it's not going to get him qualified as an architect and he needs to do further qualifications. Read the small print.

MarchingFrogs · 26/07/2020 07:57

www.architecture.com/education-cpd-and-careers/apprenticeships

According to RIBA, there are validated Level 6 courses leading to Part 1 membership run in conjunction with LSBU and Portsmouth (although the majority of apprenticeships are at Level 7, leading to Part 2 and Part 3).

Bearnecessity · 26/07/2020 13:48

Yes, think it'll be Level 6 to start with at Portsmouth as we are in Somerset....I think these are still quite new in architecture.
