Maintenance loan £2500 less - please help!

DS is struggling to pay his rent so I’ve been helping him budget (he’s in the third and final year). Turns out his maintenance loan is £2500 less than he had for the first two years.

As he lives with his dad and step mum, their income is used to determine his loan. When I asked his dad if anything had changed on the application for finance for this year, he told me that he was told he did not need to supply any information this year.
Any idea what’s happened?

I am afraid everyone gets less in their final year.
Its because they finish the course about June so the loan is to take them to then where in past years the loan is for a full 12 months x

That doesn't sound right, I still had to supply information this year for DS1s final year. However, it is slighlty down on last year as they don;t allow for the whole year.

CoatTails · 06/10/2019 23:05

Would it go down by over a third though?

If the parent hasn't supplied any financial details for this year, then possibly, because the amount paid will be the minimum (£41xx, but pro rata because it's to cover a shorter period).

My DS is in final year and on minimum loan, it has reduced by about £300 for final year.

It sounds like he has had above the minimum in previous years but it has now dropped to minimum - which will be due to his dad not supplying any financial details. Has the household Income changed substantially?

TequilaPilates · 07/10/2019 08:15

This happens in the 3rd year. Basically they don't pay you from June to October because they have left university by then. The 1st 2 years the line covers 12 months. The last year it's 9ish months.

If his dad hasn’t supplied any financial information he will automatically have been put on the minimum loan. His father should ideally be making the payments up to the amount of the full loan. If he can’t or won’t your son will need to find another way to finance his final year. Has he got a student overdraft or any other sources of money? I am not sure that you can change the loan amount at this stage but a call to student finance might help. Could he move in with you and you fill in the forms for example? Obviously this would only work if your family income is below the maximum threshold. But I guess if it wasn’t you would be in a position to help him out anyway.

Yes, you have to supply financial details every year. He'll have got the minimum loan. His dad'll have to sort it, but it can be sorted. Just takes time.

runoutofnamechanges · 07/10/2019 12:41

We had a glitch with student finance this year (not a finalist though). I didn't get an email asking me to upload financial details (obviously I checked my junk folder). I logged on to do it anyway as I knew it needed doing but the forms weren't uploaded either. In the end I had to ring student finance to chase them up after a couple of weeks waiting. I'm not sure what was going on but the advisor sent an email to both me and DS while I was on the phone and neither of those got through either.

bruffin · 07/10/2019 12:47

We have just been through this with dd 2nd year, you do need to supply parents details every year otherwise they get minimum.
Dds form really mucked up as at the moment they are not paying her tuition, although sorted out maintenance.

This^^

Never occured to me the maintenance was supposed to support for 12 months. Good heads up for year three that we'll need to top up more than usual.

Do private landlords adjust too - or are people lumbered with 12 month rentals in their final year?

No the rent stays the same though neither of mine have had a full year tenancy. It's always been half rent June to September (though no access to the property) and then full rent from September until June.

raspberryrippleicecream · 07/10/2019 16:19

DS1 is full rent with access to mid August (46 week tenancy), it's very annoying!

Your all stars!
DS has rung student finance and they were great. They sent forms for DS and his dad and step mum to fill in. Fingers crossed 🤞
