Just as it says really. Ds really wants a gap year and his reasons are sound and we are supportive. He is applying for an arts subject but we have had such a lot of conflicting advice about it.

Some say apply in gap year , others apply deferred others including two tutors at open days said to apply this year and ask for a deferral after results.

So it would be useful to hear others experiences

Depends on circumstances and uni. Dd asked to defer after results day but it was eventually declined . She had to withdraw her application and will reapply this year.

DD was unsuccessful with her application for medicine, then decided that she wasn't really sure that was what she wanted to do. She took a gap year, explored other options and applied to do biomedical science instead. As she already had her A level results (ironically good enough for medicine anyway) she received offers straight away. We are taking her to her first choice university in a couple of hours.

DD applied for a deferred place from the start in case it was refused. However she only applied to one university as she was adamant she was going there to do a particular course or nowhere so quite specific I guess Smile

My Ds has just started his gap year, he applied interviewed and was offered he accepted firm and insurance then decided he wanted a gap year so asked to defer. This was at Reading and Brighton both replied positively and his UCAS was updated for the following year. He had to meet the conditions of his offer in August and did so now has an unconditional offer and his free to travel and do his thing knowing that everything is sorted for next September.
We were originally worried about him taking a gap year but already he's changed seems more grown up, is working hard and being more social. Many of his friends through choice or not getting into their firm choices are taking a gap year.
Good luck it seems that there are many ways to do this.

I did a gap year, and applied deferred. I was abroad so it made sense to do it when i was still at home, surrounded by teachers etc that could help. It also meant arranging interviews etc was easier

I didnt get the results but they still accepted me and i wondered if that was because next years place wasnt full yet?

Im not sure why people would recommend deferring after results?

My DC never planned to have a gap year. They had their heart set on one particular university (not in UK) but not being allocated suitable accommodation made them pull out. They were offered a sports centre floor for freshers week. So no hope of opening a bank account, registering at the town hall etc. They would have to be out between 10am and 6pm, so if it was raining I had visions of DC wandering round a foreign city aimlessly. This was not good enough.

DC had a UK place too. They decided, prior to results, that their head and heart was not set on the UK university... this year. They emailed the university and their place was deferred straight away. DC is happy with their decision. They have been saying goodbye to friends over the last few weeks as they start at their universities without a moment of regret.

They have some good plans. Everyone we speak to say you can spot the students who took a gap year straight away when they start university. Last year out of 110 6th Formers at DC school, 18 took a gap year. This year it is only 3.

DC is not planning at this stage to reapply with grades in hand. They are happy with their deferred place even though they exceeded their offer by 3 grades. It is a top Russell Group but not an oversubscribed course.

@Fallofrain I think the argument for defering after results is that quite a few of the selective universities are difficult about deferred applications plus say your predictions are higher than the offer then if you meet the offer you get the place. If you apply with actual s which are above the offer but below others predicted you may not. This is what I mean about games.
