I've never done this before but hopefully I have managed to set up a new thread for UEA specific posts.
Perhaps someone can let me know if it's worked!

To @icanbewhatiwant and @sluj asking about the new science block - it was up and running at the open day at the beginning of July. We saw the very first experiment carried out in the chemistry lab. They were just waiting for some of the equipment (extractor fans?) to be signed off I seem to remember, so couldn't finish the demonstration with the big finale they had planned. Sorry @NewModelArmyMayhem18, I'm not sure where it was in relation to the environmental science bit.

DS received an email today but he was vague about its contents. Some sort of checklist I think.

Itscoldouthere · 22/08/2019 22:43

Glad to hear the science block is up and running, we first looked at UEA 2 years ago so they’ve been talking about it and we’ve seen the progress, but it wasn’t open when we last went.
DS is studying Biology

icanbewhatiwant · 23/08/2019 06:34

@CharliesMouse thanks. I'm sure it was work in progress when we looked round. But my memory is that bad I can't remember!

@Itscoldouthere biology here too.

The email did have a link to what the biology students will be doing the first Monday and Tuesday.

MrsBartlet · 23/08/2019 06:47

Ds got the email which has links to the New Student Website. It also has a link Step 3 - Register online but when you click on that there is no way to register. The page it takes you to says you need to click on the link in your email to register which is what he thought he was doing! Is there a separate registration email?

On the New Student Website he found details of his first week of seminars/taster courses etc. It looks quite full on when you consider they also have all the other freshers things happening. Having said that being busy is the best way to help them settle quickly. He also has to choose module options by 13th September but he can't do that until we have worked out how to register!

GoldenRuby · 23/08/2019 07:25

He will get an email specifically about registering. I think they are coming out in batches so he should get it soon.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 23/08/2019 07:27

DS's email did eventually come through (just before 5pm) but in his usual 'why do today what you can put off until tomorrow' he said he'd leave it until today to look at. Thanks for the heads up about the email registration link potentially not working properly @MrsBartlet.

There was definitely something being built next to the Environmental Science block when we visited last May but I cannot for the life of me remember what department it was for.

I think they will be quite busy in their freshers' week. No time for getting home-sick which is a positive.

Itscoldouthere · 23/08/2019 07:46

@icanbewhatiwant my DS has accommodation in the same area as yours, in the buildings behind, as well as being on the biology course.
My DS is not the most sociable, rather nerdy (his words) a gamer, non drinker but he usually finds his crowd. This is going to be quite a big move for him as he’s not the most together person and still seems very young to me, but he’s enthusiastic and interested, so I’m hoping for the best.
My older DS is also off to university, so it’s going to be a massive change for me, I’m going to have a very quiet house !

MrsBartlet · 23/08/2019 07:52

Thanks @GoldenRuby - I will let him know to look out for another email.

icanbewhatiwant · 23/08/2019 08:24

@Itscoldouthere my son isn't particularly sociable either. He has a small group of about 6 friends from school. His younger brother ds2 calls them all geeks. The younger one is very different he seems to be much more popular and gets on with all his peers. The oldest struggled a bit more to find friends.
Ds does like to drink but he's never had a lot. Just a couple of beers here and there, he went to a small party and saw a friend get very drunk, they had to call the lads parents to collect him as he was so ill. I think that put mine off drinking too much, for a while anyway.
He does like to game but he's not mad on it. Whereas the ds2 cannot get off the Xbox or his phone. I can't see ds2 going to university as he would either sleep or game 😀
I also have Ds3 who I think is more like the oldest. But he's only 10. So not sure yet. But the older 2 are so different.
I still have the younger 2 at home, so ds1 going away isn't feeling too bad. Plus, he's not going far (30 miles away)

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 23/08/2019 08:30

@Itscoldouthere and @icanbewhatiwant you are also describing my DS to a tee. DD is entirely different! DS is quite self-contained although he has always had a reasonable friendship group. Certainly not (yet a party-animal in any shape or form.

I have read research which indicates that eldest children, quite aside from generally being the cleverest (although that doesn't necessarily equate to most successful and/or driven), are usually the most anxious ones which may make them less sociable than younger siblings

icanbewhatiwant · 23/08/2019 08:47

@NewModelArmyMayhem18 yes ds1 will do better education wise than ds2 But I think ds2 will go further in life...if wants to do something he will, in everything he's more determined, his social skills are better, he's also better at sport. Even in the house if ds2 wants to cook something he will. Ds1 won't even try incase it goes wrong.
I think ds3 is similar to ds1 but I'm told I mollycoddle him too much, he's 5 and half years younger than ds2 and 8 younger than ds2...he's my baby still. I think he has better social skills than ds1 at his age. Ds1 is so much better now though. I think university will do him good, he has a lot to learn though, I still do too much for him, so he's going to get a bit of a shock 🤣

sluj · 23/08/2019 09:09

Isn't it strange how two or more DC can be so different? DS1, true to the norm, is very conscientious in his studies and consequently does very well. He is very self contained and just as happy reading a book than going out. He is just about to go into year 4 at UEA. When he started, my worries were whether he would put himself out to make friends, if he could organise himself and the cooking! I shouldn't have worried, he has found a big mix of friends and loves to cook the salmon from the local Aldi. As far as I know he hasn't missed any lectures. At the same time, he is still happy with his own company if needed.

DS2 start Geography at UEA this year. Again I worry about cooking and organisational skills but also about him partying too much in the ziggs Grin I have learnt that it will all work out though. He us not going to be the one that video WhatsApps every weekend Sad
DS1 recommends joining the medics rugby, open to non medics too. It's very sociable and different levels of expertise very welcome, even if you are a 5 foot male or female and never played before.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 23/08/2019 09:46

Agree @sluj. Chalk and cheese (and somewhere in between for those with more than two DC).

GoldenRuby · 23/08/2019 09:54

My DS went clubbing with a few friends for the first time ever last night. He is sociable, but isn't really a party animal (yet!). I think he is getting some practice in before freshers week and hockey club socials!

Itscoldouthere · 23/08/2019 11:27

Yes mine are very different DS2 is the one going to UEA, he’s always been the quiet, smart, the science one.
DS1 is more arts based like myself and DH he’s also very sociable, he was rather a handful st 14/15 (weed smoking/drinking) but he’s much more sensible now, he’s taken a while to find his thing and is only starting uni now, he’s 22 tomorrow so I’m not worried at all about him going off, I’m sure he will have a ball (but is also sensible enought to know he had to work as well).
I’m worried DS2 will find everything overwhelming and will retreat to his bedroom and his online friend, sitting up gaming all night 😱

juicy0 · 23/08/2019 13:02

The registration email has arrived and DD had managed to work through it and submit her photo etc. I've read that other unis have already given students their timetable and details for induction events and module choices but she couldn't see any of those things. There is a general induction timetable on the schools page (Env science in her case) but no individual timetable as yet.

OP posts:
GoldenRuby · 23/08/2019 13:07

@juicy0 if she signs into evision, with the password she will have created during the registration exercise, she will be able to see her timetable (assuming her school/faculty have uploaded it).

icanbewhatiwant · 23/08/2019 13:19

My son forwarded me the email yesterday. I told him he needs to register and he just tutted and rolled his eyes. I won't nag otherwise he won't forward emails for me to see.
He works mon-fri so I'll ask him again over the weekend.
He had a letter in the post today. It says ucas on the envelope. So it's not from UEA.

CointreauVersial · 23/08/2019 23:18

No registration email yet....will look out for it.

boys3 · 23/08/2019 23:38

none here yet either cointreau although DS2 has indicated that his subject FB group has quite a few second and third years saying that the its a phased process for emailing these out.

Had a read through the accommodation Ts&Cs today -. I had not appreciated that accommodation fees have 28 day grace period, so likely in most instances to cover any delay in maintenance loans, be that minimum level or a bit more, being received. Also an option to pay monthly instalments, as well as full term or full year. - with the same overall total due whichever option selected.

CointreauVersial · 23/08/2019 23:53

I have no clue when accommodation has to be paid!

MarchingFrogs · 24/08/2019 00:55

I have no clue when accommodation has to be paid!

Hope this helpsSmile

portal.uea.ac.uk/accommodation/living-in-residences/paying-for-your-accommodation

We have a central Finance department which handles all of our accommodation fee payments, so we do not take any payments via the UEA Accommodation Office. Accommodation fees should be paid or a payment plan agreed within 28 days of the Licence start date.

Accommodation fees are payable after your arrival at UEA. Payments are not required in advance, but will be accepted.

Registered students will be able to log on to the SITS e:Vision Portal andselect the Finance Page to view online details of your account. This willincludeany payments, credits, orinvoices outstanding. You can use e:Vision to make a payment online and set up a Direct Debit to make future payments.

NewModelArmyMayhem18 · 24/08/2019 07:18

No registration email for DS yet either.

Yes, I clocked the 28 days from when the Licence (aka contract) starts. So they have until late October to pay by which time their loans will be in the bank. A much fairer way to do it than some of the other univiersities expecting large(ish) deposits up front.

MrsBartlet · 24/08/2019 07:35

No registration email here yet either.

Thanks for the accommodation link MarchingFrogs - I hadn't seen any of that yet. Great we don't have to pay a deposit. With dd we paid a £1600 deposit up front which we got back at the end of her fourth year, although to be fair her accommodation was paid termly after the term had ended.
