Anyone else's DC having a Gap Year?

So A level results are out next week. On Monday, DC has announced that university can wait and they are going to have a gap year. They have obviously been thinking about this for a while as their plans are well thought through and detailed.

DC has worked all through the summer with university students. They have earned a good amount of money and listened to what others did in their gap year. It seems no one regrets having a gap year, but lots regret NOT having a gap year.

I would be interested in other young people's gap year experiences or plans.

Should DC defer their university place or reapply? Part of me thinks with grades in hand and having a year out they may want to apply for something completely different. It really is a sliding doors moment.

Followed up on phone yesterday. Deadline for responses is the day before term would start but may be sooner.

Is that next Saturday LIZS? (seem to remember their terms start early?).

Yes, running it a bit close. Think she is now of the mindset to reapply if they say no now, but with no guarantee they would offer again even with grades exceeding their standard offer.

What an awful experience. Good luck. Gap years rock!

Does anyone know of a website for internships/work experience available in uk, or is it a case of looking at any company individually?

How are everyone's DC gap years going so far?

How have they found the first month seeing their peers move off to university?

Are most reapplying or have they got deferred university places?

All good so far Ds already seems happier and more grown up. A lot of his friendship group are having a gap year either through choice or missing firm offers and then not wanting their insurance.

He's been out a lot more recently although he should be saving up for his travels.

He's been working hard juggling jobs. He's a lifeguard and fully qualified swimming teacher so always seems to be in demand with regular jobs or covering.

Hopefully the time away will help with his organisation.

Dd’s very happy. She has a deferred place at university for next year & is concentrating on earning money this year! She’s been working events & festivals all summer but has just started a proper full time job on an 18k salary.

LIZS · 21/09/2019 20:27

Reapplying here as deferral was denied late in the day. Dd has some volunteering lined up, applied for pt work, work experience and an internship but nothing firm yet. Music exam hopefully booked. Friends only just off. Any tips for finding language courses or short internships home or abroad? Main issue is a lack of structure to the week.

Cranmer · 21/09/2019 21:12

What type of internship? What is DD hoping to study?

Any particular language? Would your DD au pair for a few months? Often schools in Europe look for gap year language assistants.

LIZS · 22/09/2019 11:10

She has look at workaseason jobs but is not confident of having relevant experience plus Brexit uncertainty seems to be restricting opportunities abroad at the moment. Interest in language development and acquisition, arts/music, publishing.

DD is taking a Gap Year and has decided that she wants to study a different course at a different university so is reapplying via ucas. She emailed her old school to ask about a reference they said the could write a new reference but it will cost £76 for the teacher's time and admin. Is this normal?
