If she is based on the Highfield campus, Wessex Lane is an easy walk away.

kitchenwindow · 20/07/2019 07:03

Thanks - reviews seem mixed and it's hard to choose. Any idea about Glen Eyre?

The deadline for first options has already passed (dd has to do it by end May) so places will be allocated after results once all the early options are allocated. They have to choose 3

ememem84 · 20/07/2019 08:25

I stayed on archers road (Romero hall) when I was there (back in 2003....).

Glen eyre was my first choice though as was nice and close to highfield. Do you know which campus dd will be based at?

Ocies · 20/07/2019 08:28

Ds was at Glen Eyre and he liked it there. Lots of green space and easy access to campuses either walking or by uni link buses.

errorofjudgement · 20/07/2019 08:29

Glen Ayre halls are an easy 5 min walk to campus. I think the other halls are around a 20 minute walk
Plus Glen Ayre looked more inviting, better halls, more green spaces etc

burnoutbabe · 20/07/2019 08:39

I was in glen eyre! 28 years ago now!
It was nice.

kitchenwindow · 20/07/2019 09:34

She will be on the Highfield Campus
Thanks very much for all the info

Well, in the 1980s it was Glen Eyre!!! Nice and green and very short walk to campus. The very best discos... are there still discos? Confused

MarchingFrogs · 20/07/2019 15:03

Come to think of it, I think DS1 preferred Glen Eyre- but in the end, decided not to firm Southampton after all, so it became (pardon the punSmile) academic

ShanghaiDiva · 21/07/2019 14:40

I was at Southampton back in the 1980s in South Stoneham (Wessex lane) but doubt the tower block is still there!

Orangesandlemons82 · 21/07/2019 14:43

@shanghaiDiva the tower block is still there!! In 2002 they were still putting students in there - at one point 2 in a single room. It is not not in use but still standing

ShanghaiDiva · 22/07/2019 03:09

Wow - two in one room that must have been a squeeze as don't think the rooms were that large!

catshavestaff · 23/07/2019 20:43

Glen Eyre is nearer than Wessex Lane to Highfield. Unilink buses though run frequently from centre of Southampton and Wessex Lane to Highfield. Bus pass is included in hall fee if you are in a University Hall.

dreamingofsun · 27/07/2019 20:33

does anyone know about car parking at the uni? Son is driving in each day and i understand parking permits are a bit limited and worried about the cost/availability of parking generally for someone on a limited budget

MarchingFrogs · 28/07/2019 01:07

Looking at the website, students are only eligible to apply for permits for the Highfield or Avenue campus if they have s disability, or other medical need, otherwise they can apply to park at Wessex Lan and walk or take the Unilink bus from there..

Cuddlysnowleopard · 28/07/2019 17:33

When I was there (late 80's early 90's), the posh kids wanted to live in Glen, my friends and I were at Wessex Lane. Glen had carpets.

I quite liked living a bit of a walk away, as it was a break from being on campus. I was in Connaught.

dreamingofsun · 29/07/2019 14:21

thanks marchingfrogs - i've mentioned this to him. its ok for them to say parking permits are very limited, but if he cant park then he cant attend.......

CitadelsofScience · 29/07/2019 14:37

Mine has loved the time spent in Montefiore, Wessex Lane.

kitchenwindow · 19/08/2019 18:12

dd just heard - was allocated Glen Eyre Chancellors Jellico - anyone know anything about this hall? Thanks!

OP posts:
Ocies · 19/08/2019 18:32

Ds was in Chancellors (6 years ago). His flat had six rooms all non-en-suite and there were two showers rooms for them all to share. Advantage of that is the shower rooms got cleaned once a week and toilet roll was provided! Room was a good size with quite a lot of storage and a wash basin. Bed was a small double.
