Scholarship for Masters

Hi,
My DS has a place to study for a Masters and has the opportunity to apply for a scholarship. He has to write a short statement as part of the application but we are not sure what to write. Any ideas?

Surely it will depend entirely on the subject & your DS's interests? Science or Arts? Vocational or not?

To be completely honest, if he doesn’t know what to write he probably shouldn’t be applying for a scholarship just yet Hmm I’m doing a funded PhD and am not saying this to be arsey, but a HUGE part of the academic skillset is the ability to write convincing funding applications. He needs to use his initiative to research and write a draft, then approach his potential tutor(s) for feedback on that.

I got a scholarship for my MSc, albeit in the mid 1990s! I think I wrote about having completed degree X, during which I undertook dissertation titled xyz whucgbein Y prize. I am interested in perusing a career in and feel that this course of studt

... study will facilitate that. Why are you interested? Why should they give him the scholarship rather than anyone else?

I think that I just wanted to know whether to mention financial circumstances as well as all the academic stuff. We are having to provide proof of our incomes so surely some of the statement must reference that.

No, I wouldn't waste words on that, they have the information (& I have to agree, he should pushing this forward!).

What do the instructions say? Presumably they don't just say "Write a short statement" without any indication of what its purpose is. And what subject is it for? My guess at what would be expected in a supporting statement for a scholarship in molecular bioscience would be very different from one for social work. It's not just that the subjects are different: it's that different kinds of motivation and evidence of the student's likely application of the qualification would be very different.
