Bringing belongings home from university

Anybody had to bring dc’s belongings home from university and shocked by all the extra stuff accumulated by dc over the last year? I have just brought dd’s belongings home and struggled to fit in in all in the car. There was a 10 minute massive row in the street between dd and dh about all the extra stuff. I am now on the wine to unwind.

What sort of extra stuff? Clothes, shoes, extra kitchen stuff, presents they've been given from friends for birthday and Christmas, books, an extra cushion or two, fairy lights, new lamp, more clothes, plastic plants Hmm Just stuff!

DivisionBelles · 23/06/2019 12:36

We've had to do this twice in the last few weeks. DD1 graduates this year and is moving back home so boxes and boxes of accumulated stuff. How we got it all in the car I don't know. I travelled for 2 hours (not the driver) with her printer on my lap as there was literally no room in the car. She's gone travelling now for a month so it's still all in boxes in her bedroom.

DS2 has just finished his first year in halls, and didn't have quite so much stuff, but it looks like he has been on a mammoth clothes buying mission since being away and most of it is currently in piles on the floor of his very small room. ASOS have delivered another huge bag this morning too. Gaaahhh!

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 23/06/2019 12:47

When went to move ds1 from halls to a shared house he had 4 bin liners...full of trash

Not just stuff he didnt want, empty coke bottles, maccie d boxs!!!

His stuff we moved in one trip...with 4 of us in the car!

He and his partner are moving to a house by themselves for his final year

So thats two loads of stuff to move plus all the crap in his bedroom at home plus furniture as the new place is unfurnished.

We’ve rented a van for the day Grin

MrsMozartMkII · 23/06/2019 12:53

ifancyagreencard that made me giggle Grin

I'm missing those days of bringing everything home. DD2 graduated last week and is staying in her house in what is now her city, so should've been no need for me to be carting stuff around, but her sister is moving out so my services are still needed Grin I'm taking the horsebox!

whiteroseredrose · 23/06/2019 12:59

Just driving home with DS's stuff. No extras apart from books and files. Mind you we've had to clear out every term so lots of stuff that hadn't been used got left at home in January.

NoMoreCats · 23/06/2019 13:05

I feel your pain. We have to do 2 trips for DD. Where did it all come from! It's also upsetting to see the things that you have brought for them or funded all thrown about their uni room in a careless manner. I know that she's only being a normal student but it does hurt when you have forgone things for yourself to get what they want/need. And yes, she does appreciate it.

Singleandproud · 23/06/2019 13:06

I had to fly home so donated a lot of stuff to charity shops and friends and only had the one suitcase. To buy stuff in the first place I just reserved it at Argos before I arrived to ensure they had stock and then went to pick up whatever I needed (duvets etc) when I got there

Apolloanddaphne · 23/06/2019 13:11

My DD didn't bring any stuff home in the whole 3 years she was at uni (storage after halls then a flat for 2 years). We knew she had accumulated stuff and sh was warned all her stuff on the way back had to fit into a large car. She had to give a lot of stuff to charity and she chucked load of useless stuff out and managed to fit all her stuff in the car. She is still in her flat with one suitcase worth of stuff for her to fly home during the week. Her bedding and her towel will go out before she leaves. We have been ruthless with her!

MillicentMartha · 23/06/2019 13:25

DS1 has acquired a bike, a desk, a Poang ( ConfusedHmm ) and a double bed mattress topper. And a great degree and a graduate job
My ex had to go up last week to collect a lot of it. My turn next weekend.

Hortz · 23/06/2019 13:31

MrsMozartMkII A horsebox is the answer!

I can't imagine having a massive row about such a thing.

They come home at Christmas and Easter and sometimes in between and almost always take more stuff back with them. On the other hand some of the kitchen stuff is only worth binning. (Neither of mine took anything decent it was all old).
I've done lots of uni runs and youngest is coming home soon after his final year. I certainly wouldn't expect to fit three adults in the car as well as The Stuff. I always do the trips on my own, it's a bit of a ritual.
Don't expect them to take all their belongings when they move out permanently. DS1's room is still full of his stuff and he's had his own place a year.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 23/06/2019 14:31

I got a series of texts from ds1 the other day

Ds1...did i take a frying pan to uni

Me...yeah but it would only have been a cheap one and it was 2 years ago!

Ds1...did the bottom of the pan look like this [photo of a random pan]

Me.....it was two years ago!!!!!

Groovee · 23/06/2019 14:33

We had to do it in 3 visits 🙄 DD's packing I think was the issue!

Serin · 23/06/2019 14:57

A bike, a surf board and a harp that is taller than she is! Hmm
We had to make 2 journeys.

mummmy2017 · 23/06/2019 15:05

We did the storage for two weeks....
It was so easy to sort ...
Worth every penny not to have to store it at home...

HollowTalk · 23/06/2019 15:05

Send My Bag is a fantastic service for this sort of thing.

stucknoue · 23/06/2019 15:10

My parents took me but only dad picked me up for good reason! We have the pleasure of university starting in September but have a very large car thankfully!

VanillaSugarr · 23/06/2019 15:18

I’m at the student house now, filling up the car (again) with all her stuff. This is the second car load. DH blithely said that he’d only taken one car full down in 2016 so it should only take one car load back 3 years later. Hahaha hahahahhaha 😆😆😆😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂🙂🙂”I haven’t got much stuff, Mum” she said and now she’s panicking.

bevelino · 23/06/2019 17:51

With 3 dds at 2 different universities I am pleased that I have only had to bring dd1’s stuff home as at Bristol University the students can keep their clobber in halls until they move into their student house on the 1st July. Next year i’ll have all 4 dds at university and will use a delivery service.

BubblesBuddy · 23/06/2019 22:51

Just get a removal company, bevelino! Only joking! Just wait until they leave university, earn money, buy lots of stuff and move flats! And of course as parents you help out!!! We still have bedrooms for them at home with multiple wardrobes. I collected 5 winter coats from DD1 to store over the summer.

At university I brought home the boyfriend’s stuff too! It stayed at our house until his parents made time to collect it!

BasiliskStare · 24/06/2019 04:25

Grin We have a modest hatchback & after 1st year there was no way I could go and drop of DS or pick him up whilst DH driving and DS in the car - May have needed a pantechnicon . Final year - stuff was donated or binned

exWifebeginsat40 · 24/06/2019 04:33

my DD has just come home (on the coach) after her first year. she has her halls sorted for next term, and has rented a storage unit for the summer.

however, there is now a list of things that she absolutely HAS to take with her when she goes back up, so i get to do the 500 mile round trip again this September.

Yay!

MillicentMartha · 30/06/2019 10:37

DS1 is home and has finished uni!

Yesterday was a marathon of cleaning, packing, more cleaning, loading, lots of emotions and even more cleaning. We got home last night but the car still has most of his stuff in it. Couldn’t face unpacking and trying to find space in the house last night.

BackforGood · 01/07/2019 23:01

It's at times like this I think of my friend with triplets at 3 different universities in 3 different parts of the country Grin
