Nottingham or Loughborough?

Fossie · 18/02/2019 21:10

DD deciding which to put as 1st and 2nd choice. Same grades required. She looking to do ‘finance and management, at Loughborough or ‘finace, accounting and Management ’ at Nottingham. Loughborough looks a better course but Nottingham would seem to have a better reputation as a university. Has anyone knowledge of these courses? Do you think her employment chances are more influenced by degree or university?

We attended the offer day today at Nottingham. My DS wants to study Geography so he would be on the main campus. So with this in mind we will go for catered accommodation so if we get one of our choices he will be living on the main campus.

I was really impressed today and my DS will make it his firm choice.

blametheparents · 20/02/2019 22:13

DS is looking at Economics at Nottingham and Loughborough.
We went to an offer holder day at Loughborough a couple of weeks ago which was much more impressive than the offer holder day at Nottingham today.
The economics lecture today was terrible, we learnt almost nothing from it.
I agree that catered accommodation at Nottingham looks to be the way to go, but DS is more keen on self catered accommodation overall.
If DS picks Nottingham it will be in spite of the offer holder day rather than because of it!
Sports facilities look great.
I couldn’t work out if there were any bars in the student union - I’d hope so!

BackforGood · 20/02/2019 22:20

DS didn't go to Loughborough in the end, but I did wonder how much time the 'non-elite - sportsperson' got to use the wonderful facilities at Loughborough, with it being a top sports university ?

eatingtomuch · 20/02/2019 22:27

Blametheparents the geography talk was really informative. I guess all departments are different.

Overseasmom100 · 20/02/2019 22:33

Both are well respected Uni's.

Nottm is a great city Loughborough is much smaller inbetween Nottm and Leicester.

Go visit both

2rachtin · 21/02/2019 08:02

@BackforGood when I was there (and imagine it's the same now), there was a fantastic intramural sports programme so us more average people still got to use and compete using the facilities.

I also used to recreationally swim in the pool and hire various courts just for fun. I also did lots of non sporty activities.

anniehm · 21/02/2019 08:10

Think about where they want to live - Nottingham is a decent sized city, Loughborough is tiny. They suit different people - dd thought Loughborough was too small, she's a city girl

KatnissMellark · 21/02/2019 08:21

I second @2rachtin regarding sports at Loughborough. It really is open to all, whether top level country-representing athletes or people wanting to play inter-parliamentary 5 a-side.

brownmare · 21/02/2019 08:37

My son started an engineering degree at Loughborough and hated it ending up leaving almost straight away. He went on to Leeds the following year and ended up completing his phd there. He found it a totally different experience, so I would say choose as wisely as you can. I've no experience of Nottingham however.

Danglingmod · 21/02/2019 08:41

Won't there be lots of Chinese students on almost all Business type degrees everywhere (per your concern about Nott)?

Fossie · 21/02/2019 14:12

@Danglingmod not so at Loughborough from what we could see. A much better mix of students. However I think Nottingham is more international in outlook and maybe Loughborough more UK centric. The year of work (sandwich degree almost all seem to do at L) seemed to have most placements in the UK. I could be wrong, I’ve only seen one information seminar.

We live in a city and DD is a city girl so I am concerned about L when she could be at N.

Fossie I went to Nottingham and my best friend went to Loughborough, albeit 15 years ago now.

Two of my housemates lived in halls on the main campus and walked to Jubilee, and I also had schoolfriends at Nottingham who lived at jubilee and walked to main campus.

Loughborough is great as a campus uni, but it's quiet and much smaller than Nottingham. Whether that's a good or bad thing depends on your DD.

BackforGood · 21/02/2019 20:06

That's good to hear 2rachtin and KatnissMellark - that's good to know Smile

EdWinchester · 21/02/2019 20:11

I can only speak for Nottingham which is where my son is.

He absolutely loves the city life. It's very student friendly and extremely lively which for him, is perfect.

blametheparents · 25/02/2019 13:48

Looks like DS is going to firm Nottingham and make Loughbourough his insurance.
Just accomodation decisions to make now - and quickly since accomodation preferences for Nottingham open on March 1st and it's first come, first served!
@Fossie - has your DD made a decision?

Fossie · 25/02/2019 17:38

@blametheparents DD is going to go with Loughborough. She doesn’t really have an insurance since both ask the same grades but if she misses the offer grades I guess she could try Nottingham if Loughborough haven’t any places in clearing. She has and will probably have more friends at N but she will go visit on occasion rather than live there. Good luck to your DS.

My friend's son was at Loughborough. He found that many had regular long hard drinking sessions and liked nightclubbing (which may suit your DD so not a problem). He just couldn't find anyone who wanted a couple of drinks, socialising over a meal or perhaps of game of tennis/ similar. Not sure how typical that is there, but I don't think it was down to him, he's still got lots of old friends and has moved to Warwick to do his masters and fitting in perfectly there. If you get chance to speak to some students, might be worth checking this element out.

mumsiedarlingrevolta · 23/04/2019 14:18

I would suggest your DD go on Student Room and really read the comments for each Uni-my DD found this most helpful-she read what people were happy/unhappy with and decided if they would be factors for her.

It is a very personal decision-I do think the sport element at Loughborough is very pervasive-and for a non-sporty person may be harder to fit in...

Eve · 23/04/2019 14:23

DS is at Loughborough doing engineering and enjoying it. The night life is poor and not to his taste ( he's not into clubbing or the union activities) but its easy to get to Nottingham / Leics for night outs.

The university are investing heavily in halls and departments, the new engineering building is excellent and the support he gets from his department is good.

EmmaGrundyForPM · 23/04/2019 14:28

My ds is at Nottingham Uni and loves it. He is sharing a house with someone whose course is on the Jubilee campus and it really isnt a problem getting there.

Ds is very sporty but not a county level player. He loves the Sports facilities at UoN which are really good and takes part in the intra mural matches.

He has a friend at Loughborough who likes the course but hates the town. But if your dd isnt a city person then she may prefer Loughborough
