do I remember that someone found loads of stats about oxbridge applications?

Sorry - have been a bit of lurker on this group and think I remember that someone put up a link to lots of detailed oxford or cambridge applications stats.
I am trying to assess whether history, econ and maths are a sensible combo for a history degree and wondered if there were stats or material anywhere about what a levels successful history applicants tend to have (like the very detailed commentary on oxford's medicine page).
Also on grades held, which I am sure is somewhere but I can't track down.
Any data-hounds out there who could help me?

If you look on the freedom of information site you can see all previous questions that have been asked, I think that is where they were from.

Fifth result after searching 'admissions data' on Oxfords website:
https://www.admin.ox.ac.uk/aad/studentregistry/sdma/statistics/

HAT would also be needed don't forget.

Well that combination is pretty much perfect for the joint course - History and Economics.

Tantalisingly most of the most interesting reports in that link are for internal access only, but I will keep poking around - many thanks for the link and advice.

The freedom of info site threw up exactly the a level info but for history and economics so more shuffling may well pay off.

Thanks all

What school year is your DC in OP?

Abetes · 14/02/2019 10:15

Not specifically about A levels but lots of info here:

Your DS should simply choose the three subjects he's most interested in then OP, provided one of those is History. People come with a wide range of A level subjects and there aren't the course constraints that there are with Medicine. Of my three DC who read History at Oxford DD2 did History, English and Art (French to AS), DS2 did History, English and Geography (Maths to AS) and DS3 did History, Geography and Physics (English to AS). Their friends did all sorts of combinations - there really is no particular set which will better your DS's chances of getting an offer.

Gosh - you really do have lots of experience of this then goodbyestranger!

I think you just be right about enjoyment. I can already see a few of his friends picking all stem influences by parental concerns about employment etc, when they have no real verve or flair in those areas, and wonder how that will pan out.

I think he is going to abandon the idea of further maths as his fourth (they all have to do 4 for the first year then two thirds of them drop one) and do geog or theology instead and then at the end of the year can make a more informed decision.

I have to admit to being a bit concerned about the school’s results in economics and I note that Westmisnter also has pretty poor econ results last year - some school some where must be pulling in the a stars but it isn’t the ones I follow! Perhaps there are few a stars in econ overall, or perhaps it is harder to tell what is wanted/ is less well taught than other subjects.

Our school (state) had very good results for Economics last year. GCSE was 100% A and four of the top ten marks in the country including the very top mark. At A level it was 80% A/A. I think it's fair to say that very good Economics teachers are thin on the ground and our school is currently very lucky.

I very definitely think your DS's choice of subjects for History should be interest/ enjoyment led and that's the only thing he needs to put into the pot when deciding.
