Master in Chemical Engineering

Looking for some advice please. My DS is currently studying for a chemistry degree at a good redbrick uni. He is currently on track for a low 1st or high 2.1. At his uni he has the option to finish after 3years with a BSc or to continue to do the Masters. He now seems keen to follow a route into chemical engineering by taking a masters but his uni doesn’t offer chemical engineering. How easy is it to transfer to a masters in chem eng? And if so, where would be a good course? TIA.

Jilted - so glad this thread has given your DC some wider options.

I will suggest he looks at the UCL course but it seems that my DS may have to rethink.

Thanks for the wider suggestions. Are there any other options more experienced MNers can suggest?

What I would suggest for you DS, depending on what stage he is at, is that he looks for a summer placement or even some work shadowing in a chemistry job in a manufacturing company. Something like Syngenta - a very chemistry intensive agrochemical business. Pharmaceuticals would be the other area GSK for example. Then he could see how industrial chemistry would be, as well as probably working with chemical engineers. Both organic chemistry I’m afraid, but most of the chemical industry is. Dow Corning (although I’m not sure if they are still in South Wales or not) Grace Sulicas in Warrington are two inorganic fine chemical companies that I can come up with off the top of my head, also Tioxide

Didn’t mean to post! Tioxide is now part of Huntsman, titanium dioxide based chemicals, again I’m not sure if they are still in the Northeast.

StealthPolarBear · 11/02/2019 21:36

They are :)

Huntsman is still in the NE, but the titanium dioxide bit (and the iron oxides and stuff they bought a couple of years ago) is under the name of Venator.

Dancingdreamer · 12/02/2019 21:12

Never even heard of half these companies! I will ask him to investigate.

I did manage to spell silicas wrong, which is ironic since I used to spend my life making them.
