DD is in year 12 and taking a levels in English politics and biology. She is a high achiever and did really well at gcse achieving all 7s 8s and 5x9s . She knows she wants to go to university but doesn't know what to do! What is the best degree to have and from what universities? I know it isn't as simple as that. But we have no clue of where to start. She loves a bit of debating and is all round good kind person with a lot of integrity. Hope someone can offer some advice?

What my Dd is categorising today: Tudor foreign policies. More tutor foreign policies. Lists and lists of tutor foreign policies.
I can sympathise with your Dd OP.

Ha Tudor was autocorrected to tutor! That would be a whole different subject!

Piggywaspushed · 03/02/2019 15:44

My DS is doing the Tudors for GCSE. He likes it! But it may be a bit less dull at that level when it's all about Elizabeth lopping off Mary's head.

Hull offers Law with Politics. Might not be the best for a career in law but could be an excellent fit for her interests.

Hollowvictory · 04/02/2019 08:38

Hull is not highly regarded though is it.

As with all universities different courses are held in differing levels of regard. See this concurrent thread where the view seems to be that the politics courses are www.mumsnet.com/Talk/higher_education/3497474-DS-university-first-choice

I've done English and Journalism (separately). I think a journalism degree does give you a better knowhow of how to write journalistic pieces. In my experience though, most journalists really just want to be writers, which in that case an English degree is best.

Moominmammacat · 04/02/2019 09:38

Don't do journalism degree!

BubblesBuddy · 04/02/2019 10:02

If you want Law, the best policy is aim very high! Top 10. And that is for any academic degree. The recruitment process favours top RG above all else. It’s the way it is. So many applicants are top notch, university and quality of degree count. Journalism would not make life easy! Go for the best she can get to. Everyone gets into the GDL but getting a job and a training contract is another matter.

BubblesBuddy · 04/02/2019 10:10

For journalism or law, aim high regarding university. Especially Law. You can easily do the GDL afterwards but getting a job and a training contract is greatly improved if you have a good degree from a top level RG university. It’s just that the competition is fierce and people with the best A levels are looked at a bit critically if they didn’t aim high and went to the less good local university at home when they could have pushed themselves to go somewhere better. Even a first won’t compensate. So look on line for courses using something like the complete university guide. All universities have a huge amount of information on line.

Oh dear!! Apologies. First post was missing so I started again. Ignore one or the other.

If she’s a high achiever and interested in Oxbridge then she could take a look at HSPS (Human, Social and Political Sciences) at Cambridge. York and Manchester also have some good, broad similar courses.
