Anyone with DC at Sheffield?

I was just after some info. My DD dropped out of UCL for a number of reasons. She was very unhappy and having to cope with some very serious and challenging issues in her personal life. She has been so brave and is trying to get her life back on track. She has just been offered a place at Sheffield and I wondered if anyone could let me know how their DC are getting on and of they like it.

Hi there, my DS is a first year at Sheffield, he has settled in really well, the teaching is excellent, the accommodation is good, the facilities are great. Nothing really but positives, on visiting both the uni and student village it feels very welcoming and relaxed. All the lecturers and students in his department were full of praise and enthusiasm. The area around the uni is nice and plenty of private and uni accommodation seems to be available. There also seems lots of support, he has a student mentor and other support networks are easily available. If you have any specific questions please ask or I will ask him for you.

What’s she’s studying? That’ll make all the difference. A course with more contact hours (sciences etc) tend to feel more supportive as you’re automatically included in more things.

Thanks for the responses. She is studying sociology. @Marmie4 Ive sent you a PM

My God son is currently a student there. Doing single honours humanity subject. His mum complains it has 6 hours contact time. However, it doesn’t worry him and he’s really enjoying the course, the city and has plenty of friends.

Having had DH and DSis there, I do know it can be quite a boozy, stay up late, culture in the halls. I’m not sure if there are quiet halls. Godson is enjoying the all the city has to offer in the early hours and that’s not unusual! So choose a hall carefully.

Sheffield doesn’t have many privately educated DC so that suits quite a few students too!

A friend's DD is there and loves it. Made great friends and is really enjoying her course. Student accommodation is in a nice part of town.

I went to Sheffield 2003-2006 and absolutely loved it.

My DS is in his 2nd year, he is finding the work a challenge but that isn't a bad thing. There are halls in 2 main places, in the city centre and an area just out of the city making a student village - different students prefer different locations.

Ranmoor and Endcliffe are very much in the City. Just not so near the centre as they are close to the university and the popular student areas such as Broomhill and Hunters Bar. A lot of students wouldn’t bother with the central shopping area so much. However, getting around is easy so it’s a case of choosing what area is best for each student.

I thought Ranmoor had been knocked down. My sister was there in 1978.
I know people whose DC are at Sheffield, and they love it. It is very much a student city, and has loads going on. DD didn't want to go to Sheffield as it is on our doorstep, so she is going further afield.

It’s the name of the student village. It’s new! By and large! DH was in Sorby.

Tigger03 · 23/01/2019 18:56

I graduated from Sheffield in 2014 and I loved it! The accommodation is amazing compared to other universities and everyone is really friendly.

It’s a cheap city to be in and there are plenty of job opportunities if needed whilst studying via the students union (voted the best in the country for a number of years).

The lectures were interesting and I easily got a place on a well respected grad scheme after studying history.
