Oxbridge offers and IB

Would be interested to hear of anybody whose DC got an Oxbridge offer based on the IB rather than A level. What were the IB offers especially in terms of Higher grades?

Friend of my daughter has been offered 38 points for law - unsure of whether there is any requirement for 7s at higher level.

DeadDoorpost · 13/01/2019 19:38

Several of my friends got offers anywhere from 38 upwards depending on the course they were applying for.

However, we also knew people who got no offers because the IB thought that they didn't have enough of a social life, or were too enthusiastic, or didnt know enough (they got 42 IBP) so it was hit and miss for my year.

Because Oxbridge not the IB 🙄

38 is standard for humanities at Oxford (666HL) and Cambridge Colleges are more likely to vary but DD's friends had up to 42 with 776HL.

Thanks. I think for most people good enough to apply the overall score is not so tricky especially the 38/39 from Oxford. It is the highers that are the challenge given the overall work load.

PS of course lots of people who are predicted or achieve 40-45 don't get in much as plenty who got a full-house in A-levels don't make it either.

DC1 found that Cambridge's typical IB offers for their subject were ludicrously higher than for A levels. It was crazy when converted to UCAS points for comparison. Oxford's were comparable to A level expectations.

They haven't applied to either though. The Oxford score is within reach but we live v v near Csmbridge & DC1 is keen to leave that scene behind.

I don't think 38 is that high for Oxford (not suggesting it's easy), ds needed 38 for Warwick - I was under the impression that offers were around the 41/42.

horsemadmom · 15/01/2019 08:25

Oxford has a very thorough interview process. If they have decided that they want you, they want you. For DD1, her Oxford offer was her lowest offer. She had a stupid offer (43 777) from another uni and she put them down as insurance and a two fingered salute.

I have heard of severe people with Oxford offers of 39 although they are predicted well into 40's I think. Yes the 38 or 39 is relatively easy (as much as the IB can ever be easy!) Slightly surprised that lots of Oxford offers are 666 at Higher which again is not too demanding. I would have expected maybe 776 or 766 with 7 in most relevant subject but perhaps this is recognition of the difficulty of the IB across so many subjects.
